Early Number Sense
To help our Pre-K and K students get a jump on number sense, it's important for them to be able to:
- Pre-K
- Count to 10
- Know that the last number counted tells the number in the set if objects counted
- Know the number before or after a given number (1-10)
- Identify numbers to 10
- Match a number to a set
- Compare sets (using a drawing or tools) as greater than, less than, or equal to.
Easy things you can do at home:
- K
- Count to 100
- Focus on numbers in the teens (10-20)
- Know the number before or after a given number (to 50)
- Count by 2's, 5's, and 10's to 100
- Count on from a given number (ex. starting at 17, begin counting)
- Subitize (think about the dots on a die, students should be able to see "six", or "five", etc. immediately)
- Developing the idea of 5'ness and 10'ness
- Matching a number to a set/picture
- Counting backwards
- Compare sets of objects and know "how many more?, how many less?"
- Decompose numbers to 10 (ex. 10, 5 + 5, 6 +4, 8 + 2)
