Early Number Sense

To help our Pre-K and K students get a jump on number sense, it's important for them to be able to:

  • Pre-K
    • Count to 10
    • Know that the last number counted tells the number in the set if objects counted
    • Know the number before or after a given number (1-10)
    • Identify numbers to 10
    • Match a number to a set
    • Compare sets (using a drawing or tools) as greater than, less than, or equal to.

Easy things you can do at home:

  • K
    • Count to 100
    • Focus on numbers in the teens (10-20)
    • Know the number before or after a given number (to 50)
    • Count by 2's, 5's, and 10's to 100
    • Count on from a given number (ex. starting at 17, begin counting)
    • Subitize (think about the dots on a die, students should be able to see "six", or "five", etc. immediately)
    • Developing the idea of 5'ness and 10'ness
    • Matching a number to a set/picture
    • Counting backwards
    • Compare sets of objects and know "how many more?, how many less?"
    • Decompose numbers to 10 (ex. 10, 5 + 5, 6 +4, 8 + 2)
