Katie Squire is a senior at Lafayette High School. She has taken art all four years and developed her love for realism along the way.
Katie plans to major in Elementary Education at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah.
Katie is featured as a young artist and individual who has demonstrated exceptional drive and dedication for her work and education.

What got you into the visual arts at Lafayette?
What got you into the visual arts at Lafayette?
I’ve always loved art ever since I was a little girl, I loved using every color I could find and drawing an underwater scene. In middle school I entered into a couple art competitions. When I got to Lafayette I started in Art 1 with the intent of having fun. Mrs. Detraz quickly noticed my love for detail, something I don’t think I had noticed before. I took longer than anyone else to complete one project, she always gave me extensions and when I got to Drawing 1 she would give me different assignments, all focused on realism. After drawing 1 I realized how much I love realism. And how much I love graphite. It’s so fun! Now I’m in an independent study where I manage my own work and have creative freedom! I am so thankful for Mrs. Detraz and her love for her students!

How do you see art playing a role in your future?
How do you see art playing a role in your future?
I am planning to keep art as a big role in my life. I would love to keep it in my daily routine because it keeps me relaxed and I want to continue to improve my abilities. With my plans of being an elementary school educator I hope to incorporate art into that as well

Emily Copeland is probably my favorite artist! I look to her for inspiration because she does crazy realistic drawings, it's insane. She is very inspiring.
