What is Dual Credit: Dual credit means that you receive college credit for courses that are taught during the day at our high school. The cost of a dual credit course is $60 per credit hour. Most of the courses are three credit hours, so that means that one three hour course will cost $180.
How do I sign up for dual credit? To sign up for dual credit through Mineral Area College, you need to do the following steps.
First, you will need to pick up a dual credit form from me in counseling center at Farmington High School. Fill out the form, mark the courses that you want to take, and make sure that the course you want to take and are already on your high school schedule.
Second, you may need to fill out an online Mineral Area College High School Dual Enrollment Admissions Application if you have not previously taken coursework through MAC. It is available online at the MAC website under the admissions tab or my clicking here under "high school dual enrollment."
Third, you will need to have taken a standardized test such as the ACT or Accuplacer to qualify for dual credit through MAC. For most MAC college classes, you will need a qualifying ACT reading score of 18 or better. For English Comp I you will need an English ACT score of 18 or better while Math scores vary according to the course. The required scores are listed on this link. If you haven’t already taken the ACT, you can always take the Accuplacer either at FHS or MAC. To take at Farmington High School, please schedule a test by emailing Brian Reeves at breeves@farmington.k12.mo.us.
Why take college credit classes while in high school?
Practice and Preparation. The “power of 15”---students who leave high school with 15 college credit hours are twice as likely to graduate from a four year university.
Make sure that your student graduates in four years or eight semesters. Most scholarships/financial aid packages are only for eight semesters. 60% of bachelor degree students take six years to earn their four year degree.
Cost: MAC is $60 per credit hour. The University of Missouri is $335
Farmington High School Scholarship---To qualify, students need to earn a composite score 21 on the ACT. For dual credit classes only at FHS for a total of 15 credit hours (15 total hours Fall and Spring Semesters only) qualifying students pay $30 per credit hour.
