Fairchild Semiconductor

Beginnings of The Fairchild Semiconductor

The Fairchild Semiconductor was created in 1955 by William Shockley who earned a Ph.D. Who then earned a Nobel Prize for physics in 1956. Then in 1957 the Fairchild Semiconductor started producing many silicon transistors. In 1958 they made an advancement in electrical circuits making them the size of a fingernail. This was a start of a great company.

Our topic is important because of how the Fairchild Semiconductor revolutionized the camera and electronics industry. They created a brand new type of silicon transistors which were more advanced than other transitors at the time. This was a part of how they were so successful in there work. In 1967 the company expierienced a breakdown when the company lost an approximate amount of 7.6 million dollars. Profits sunk from an average of 3$ to a whopping average of 50 cents. Soon with the company running low on money, Texas Instuments' transistors became faster than the Fairchild transistors. In 1987 Fairchild Semiconductor was sold to the National Semiconductor for about $200 million dollars. In 1999 Fairchild Semiconductor launched itself as a public company on the New York Stock Exchange. They now have a headquarters in Portland, Maine and more manufacturing facilities in Utah, Malaysia, Phillipines, and South Korea. They have employed over 8,000 employees worldwide.
