The Unit Tasks Document below, for my Earth Science class, is similar to the one that I submitted for Innovative Pedagogies with updates to reflect the new unit on Weathering and Erosion. Within this document, there are hyperlinks to videos, PPT presentations, Vocabulary Slides, a Scavenger Hunt, Section Quizzes, and a Menu Choice Board for an End-of-Unit Masterpiece Project.
One thing that I've added is a Celebration Team-Against-Team Challenge in the form of an "Escape Room" of sorts. This part of the assignment completely overwhelmed me; how was I going to create a game that represented the characteristics of gaming and gamification and still be relevant and something that I would actually use with my kids. I had wanted to use something that a fellow cohort member was trying, however, it did not allow for use on Chromebooks so I had to come up with another option. That's when I remembered a website that I ran across months ago and wanted to use: BreakoutEDU. When I went to their website and saw they had digital versions of Breakout Games; AND, certain membership options allowed for creation functions, I was sold! I purchased the annual, Educator membership and got started. It was so much fun creating this game! I love getting creative and I love puzzles so this was a perfect fit. I created clues that require them to search meanings of words and scramble the first-letters to make a word; I created riddles that would give a clue to shapes; I gave references to a geographical location and clues should indicate a number sequence.
This type of game and its creation, really allow for educators to either assess for topic knowledge; or, to infuse topic-related material in relevant and meaningful ways. I am excited to see how the kids do when we get to the end of our unit and I believe this just might be the best way to fill my library of hyperdocs for my final project.
