Implementing Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) school-wide can seem like a daunting task. PBIS has many features and teams often struggle to properly identify next steps and/or elements being implemented without fidelity. The Tiered Fidelity Inventory (TFI) is a tool that teams can use to address these issues.
“The purpose of the TFI is to provide a valid, reliable, and efficient measure of the extent to which school personnel are applying the core features of school-wide positive behavioral interventions and supports (SWPBIS Tiered Fidelity Inventory).”
The TFI breaks PBIS implementation into core features for Tier I, Tier II, and Tier III interventions and supports.
“Schools may take the TFI as:
An initial assessment to determine if they are using, or need, PBIS
A guide for implementation of Tier I, Tier II, and/or Tier III practices
An index of sustained PBIS implementation
A metric for identifying schools for recognition within their state implementation efforts (PBIS Apps)”
Schools that are new to PBIS generally have some features of PBIS already in place, therefore it is suggested that even schools new to PBIS take the TFI. “First-year implementers may conduct the TFI as an initial assessment – moving to administering the survey every third or fourth meeting. Schools reaching 70% fidelity three consecutive times may choose to take the TFI as an annual assessment (PBIS Apps)”
The links under "Essential Learning" will provide you with the necessary resources for conducting the TFI survey with your Tier 1/PBIS Leadership team. Upon its completion you will have an assessment of current PBIS implementation as well as identification of the Tier 1 features that need improvement. Resources in other Tier 1 features will then support your team in developing an action plan to lead towards having PBIS fully implemented with fidelity.
