TIPS forms can serve as an action plan based on data
One of the most powerful aspects of PBIS is data informed decision making. Data is not only used to identify areas of improvement, but also to identify areas that should be celebrated when schools meet their goals. Data collection was discussed in Feature 1.12. Here, that data is analyzed and turned into action based upon needs identified in the data.
Some schools look at the "Big 5 Office Discipline Reports" to analyze general trends in schoolwide behavior. These reports include analysis of:
Average referrals per day per month
Behavior
Location
Time
Student’s involved
These reports can be combined with data from other sources, such as:
In-school suspensions (ISS) and Out of school suspensions (OSS);
Absences and Tardies;
Academic Data, such as failures
Common Formative Assessments or Benchmark Assessments
Other schools conduct a data drill down which connects many of these elements and helps them to develop a precise problem statement. Regardless of the process, the idea is that teams analyze data, identify areas for improvement of implementation, and create plans and schoolwide goals are set.
This process means that data needs to be analyzed regularly. At a minimum it data should be examined at least once a month. This is often done prior to a Tier 1 team's meeting by the data analyst. Doing so allows the Tier 1 team to focus their time on developing the action steps staff will take to try and improve Tier 1 implementation. This also means that is it essential to share both data and the decisions made based on the data with staff monthly as well. Often these decisions also support the PBIS professional development of staff and teaching expected behaviors to students.
It is important that this process is only intended to examine data and make decisions that impact and include the Tier 1-Schoolwide supports. Data that indicates individual students who need additional support should be handled by the Tier 2 team, Student Assistance Team, or other problem solving team.
