Recording Students for Instructional Purposes
Best practice for ESU 1 staff on recording students for instructional purposes:
It is acceptable for ESU1 staff to create audio or visual recordings when conducting an observation of a student, the recording is related to a coaching session, or as part of staff evaluations. These are acceptable practices, and it is not necessary to gain specific permission for these specific instances from Sarah, Stuart, or school administration as these are already approved. Before video recording a student best practice is to obtain parental consent
Parental consent for this purpose could be as simple as a handwritten note signed by the parent in your presence. The note should contain the following, "I give consent for my child to be recorded (video and/or audio) for educational purposes to be shared with the other team members and/or district staff". The note should be accompanied by a parental signature. Preferably, this consent form would be used: School Age Digital Images Consent Form.
Signed consent is only valid for one year. Best practice is to have consent signed at annual IEP meetings.
