INTEGRATED READING AND WRITING INSTRUCTION
In support of the focus on integrating reading and writing instruction to build student literacy skills, the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) has a new assessment item type for the grades 5, 8, and EOC 11 Reading SOL tests (beginning Spring 2024). The new item type asks students to write about what they have read in a nonfiction passage that may include history/social science or science-based content. While reinforcing the importance of having students write about what they have read, this new integrated reading and writing item also provides a measure of students’ writing ability without requiring an additional test.
Integrated Reading and Writing Items (Word) - This guide provides specific item information for each question for Grades 5, 8, and EOC 11 based on the 2017 English Standards of Learning. Information on tool functionality for the writing prompt is also included.
NEW Integrated Writing Practice Items have been included in TestNav8 for students at Grades 5, 8, and EOC 11 to practice seeing these new item types! Select the window to the left to be directed to those item types.
NEW Checklists for Writers will be embedded in the Integrated Writing Practice Items: The Checklist for Writers will be provided as an Exhibit in the online test delivery system on the item that presents a writing prompt based on the accompanying nonfiction passage.
Scoring rubrics: These rubrics are aligned to the 2017 English SOL and will be used to score the written response for the new assessment item type.
