We investigate germination from an avocado seed

A 5 year old child had brought an avocado seed to school. Primarily we observed and discussed our questions ... How could we make it germinate? Could we plant it in soil? Or in water? Can we plant other seeds in the same way?

How can we plant the seeds?

We have planted avocado seeds, lentils and chickpeas in different substrates, and we have created a template to make observations and record their development.

Motivation and aims:

Give answers to the questions raised from the observation of the avocado seed.

Investigate germination.

Determine which conditions allow the seeds to germinate and which do not.

Observe the germination process and record it in a control template.

Lessons learnt

The seeds need water, light and air to germinate.

Find out what conditions cause the seeds to rot.

Determine the differences between the germination of a small seed (from lentils or chickpeas) and an avocado seed.
