Need: Students need to see the relevance in the concepts they are learning. Students need authentic work based experiences to determine what career fields are of interest to them.
Objective: Empower students with meaningful workplace experiences to make informed decisions as they transition into college and careers, emphasizing the practical application of classroom concepts in real-world settings to reinforce the relevance of their learning.
Our series began last year, which was a result of our initial educator visits to the Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital in 2021-22. Following one of our one day educator visits, many of the schools reached out to the Cleveland Clinic to request student visits. In response, the Cleveland Clinic Avon Hospital offered to host 10 students each month, in partnership with the Lorain County BAC. Targeted students interested in careers in healthcare entered employee only hallways and rooms (Surgery) during this four hour event to determine their interest in healthcare careers.
2023-24
During the 2023-24 school year, we have been able to take approximately 10-12 students to the clinic each month. Each school district has had the opportunity to take 6 students on thier given month.
As an extension of our Real World Math Applications in Action Teacher workshop, we offered a math based competition for high school math students in partnership with AJ Rose. Students competed in teams of 4. Each team completed three activities for a combined score of up to 150 points. The game based activity is designed to engage students as they tour AJ Rose Manufacturing and learn about the opportunities available in manufacturing. This workshop also reinforces math concepts students learn in the classroom, and answers the question "When Will I ever use this?" Students learned about the wire edm machine, and performed an activity testing their teams ability to apply what they have learned in the classroom as they complete a cartesian coordinates activity!
