Why was YouTube really created?
Registered on February 14, 2005, by Steve Chen, Chad Hurley, and Jawed Karim. It was actually made to be a dating app. For that reason it was originally launched on Valentine's day.
Who knew it would take off, and the public would love these vlog-home videos so much!!! A month later Chad thought he should launch the site for public use. The site opened on a limited (“beta”) basis in May 2005, attracting some 30,000 visitors per day.
By the time YouTube was officially launched (as a youtube site) on December 15, 2005, it was getting more than two million video views each day. By January 2006 that number had risen to 25 million views.
This was when the public could finally publish whatever they wanted, and the beta stopped, making it the regular launch. The number of videos available at the site surpassed 25 million in March 2006, with more than 20,000 new videos uploaded on a daily basis.
By the summer of 2006, YouTube was serving more than 100 million videos per day, and the number of videos being uploaded to the site showed no sign of slowing down. Now, in 2023 (mostly because of COVID) yearly, we are already up to 2.8 billion views.
