Students participated in these Spirit Days:

Pajama day

Students participated in a fun, cozy day. Each student wearing pajamas was required to donate $2 to Mikey’s Way. It was very enjoyable for students, even teachers were wearing pajamas!

Crazy hair day

Students competed for the craziest hair. Of course, in support of Mikey’s Way by a donation of money. Each grade had an award for best hair!

BRACELETS FOR SALE!

By Charles Isaac Rabinowitz

Brace yourself! Bracelets were on sale… (very bad) pun intended. To raise money for Mikey’s Way, HKMS students created bracelets for Mikey’s Way to be sold in the media center. They were also for purchase at the Ciao Bella Boutique in Fairfield. Pay $10 to buy 2 bracelets; 1 for yourself and 1 to donate for someone Mikey’s Way will help out. Students made them during ELT. There’s no doubt that it had an impact on HKMS reaching its goal of $5,000 for Mikey’s Way.

Incentives to Donate

If you haven’t heard yet, there are prizes for the top donors to Mikey’s way. There are three prizes to pick from if you win top tree donors. The prizes include, a $100 Amazon gift card, a Nintendo Switch with an included game, and a Kindle Fire. The first place winner gets first pick, then the second place winner, and finally the third place winner gets the last item. At the end of March, Mrs. Mohr and Dr. Clapp made a video of them doing the “Griddy”. Now, here are the top donors; Chris Barcello from 8th grade, Lucia Ferrari from 7th grade, and Arjun Nambiar from 7th grade. All three chose Amazon gift cards.

BAKING CHALLENGE

By Arjun S. Phatak

As one of the many fundraisers for Mikey’s Way, the Baking Challenge was on 3/28/22. The judges were Easton's First Selectman, David Bindelglass, ER9 Superintendent, Dr. Mckinnon, SSES Principal, Kimberly Fox Santora, HKMS Principal, Dr. Steven Clapp, HKMS Assistant Principal, Annie Mohr, and Alina’s Bakery owner, Alina Dancho. The contestants were our very own HKMS students.

As the contestants were getting ready, I got a chance to speak with Mikey’s dad. I asked him how he felt about being Mikey’s dad. He said, “I think it is a special privilege and I think I am a very lucky guy to have had him as my son.”

I also asked him what he does in Mikey’s way. He told me, “ I run Mikey’s way. I do the purchasing and the distribution of the products. I tell Mikey's story.”

Since he gives the gifts I asked him how he felt when he gives a gift. He said, “ Every time we give a gift, I know we are making Mikey happy. We are completing his wish.”

I also asked him if he thinks he is making a difference in kids' lives. He said, “ There are over 9,000 kids who got a laptop or tablet from Mikey's way. They are pretty happy.”

My final question was probably the most important question. I asked him how he felt when Mikey asked for his wish of giving technology to kids with cancer. He said two words. “ Proud. Very proud.”

Finally, the countdown began. The students had 45 minutes to create something with the theme of “ Spring is Blooming.” Mrs. Aponte, one of the HKMS faculty, is in charge of this fundraiser. We interviewed her and she said, “ I am excited that we can do things to help and raise money for a good cause. Putting this fundraiser together was a lot of work. I had to find kids, supplies, donations, and prizes.”

The contestants started working on making the cakes or cupcakes. There was 1 winner for best cupcakes and 1 winner for best cake.

At the front of the setup, there was one large table with ingredients that students could use. Thank you Alina Dancho for supplying these ingredients.

The winner for best cake is our very own Rhys Oulette!! Congrats Rhys! The winners for the best cupcakes were Keira Elliot and Amelia Samon.
