School Debates In Debate Club
The Final Debate
Are ghosts real? By: Elizabeth Kimball
Sadly, at this point in the school year, some clubs are coming to a close, and this includes the debate team. As this is the final debate I see only fitting to write out the debate, contentions, process, and results. For this debate there are two teams, and the proposition, or prop, consists of myself, Chase Maila, Alex Lempert, and Siara Menon. The opposition, or opp, includes Nathaniel Cohen, Rhys Ouellette, and George Manna. Prop is arguing that ghosts are real, while opp is arguing the opposite. The debate takes place on Thursday, April 28, 2022. Before we go into the actual debate, let's take a look at the process of making a solid argument.
From Chase Maila, “I think that when you are trying to find evidence and details to support your argument, it really depends on the website you are gathering your information from.” The information gathering process really depends on the topic.
We start off with eating cookies! After we are all finished eating, the debate can begin. Our first speaker is Alex Lempert from the prop team. The contentions for the prop team consisted of, ghost equipment, exosims, haunted houses, Patrika the mummy, and ghost sightings. As you may have noticed from the contentions, this debate was not in favor of the prop team.
As for the opp team, there was no recorded evidence of their contentions, so we may just have to go on memory. As of late, the only definite contention is packman. Even through this severe lack of contentions, with an illegal move performed by Nathaniel Cohen, the opp team swept out the competition.
After all, the opp team won the final debate but, it isn’t really about the end result or who wins, it's about the memories made (and the seances). Overall, I’m really looking forward to returning to the debate team next year!
