Miss Guy and Miss GuthrieÂ
Since coming back to school we have been developing many of our literacy skills.Â
Children are given lots of opportunities for reading, writing and talking and listening everyday. Reading for enjoyment has been one of our focuses with children choosing a book to read for 15 minutes after lunch every day. Children have enjoyed exploring different types of books and discussing them with their friends.
We have also been reading our class novel, Song of the Dolphin Boy by Elizabeth Laird, which has tied in with our context for learning, Under the Sea. We have had great class discussions about the characters and story line!
Children have also been doing amazing work on adjectives, alliterations and similes in their writing. This week we used all of this learning to design our own monster and write a story about them.Â
We have also been developing our talking and listening skills. Children are always very keen to share their weekend news and some have presented speeches when running for our equality representative and MMP. After many excellent speeches and posters, we have two new representatives - well done to Sophia (equality rep) and Stanley (our MMP)!
In numeracy, we have been learning about lots of different things including: times tables, money, symmetry, 3d objects and data handling. Children have shown great progress in the short time we have came back!
Each day we do some mental maths - children love to do their 'Daily Dozen'! We have also enjoyed doing lots of problem solving activities, using our numeracy skills to solve some maths mysteries!Â
Children are also given the opportunity to develop their maths skills through purposeful, child led play. One of our current favourites is times tables snakes and ladders!
We love going to PE on Wednesdays and Fridays and have been practising lots of different skills! We are currently focusing on basketball and are working on improving our dribbling, passing and shooting.
During these first few weeks we have been learning across other areas of the curriculum through the context of 'Under the Sea'.
We have looked at the layers of the oceans and how deep it can be (we couldn't believe how far down the ocean went and all the animals that live there!).
Children completed amazing ocean fact files in groups and presented these to the rest of the class, teaching their peers about interesting facts of the different oceans.Â
We have also learned about origami and created brilliant boats using nothing but a piece of A4 paper!
We are sure you have all heard of Murray the Bear by now! Murray gets to go home with one lucky person each Friday to spend the weekend with them and their family - throughout the year everyone will get a chance to take Murray home. So far Murray has already been to a football match, baked cakes and in a hot tub! We love hearing about Murray's adventures on a Monday and can't wait to hear what else he gets up to over the year.
