Primary 4A Class Blog - October 22

with Miss Guy and Miss Guthrie

Welcome back!

Another great block in Primary 4A with loads of great learning opportunities and experiences. Please read below to find out some more about what we've been learning!

Numeracy

Our numeracy learning has continued to come on leaps and bounds during this block! We have been learning about lots of different maths concepts including: time, reading calendars, symmetry, number machines and the order of operations. Scroll through the pictures above to see some examples of our learning!

From 26th September to 2nd October we celebrated Maths Week Scotland in the classroom. Children were given time to compete in the Sumdog Maths Week Competition and did extremely well! We also looked at maths in other curricular areas, and during art created number people/creatures who were made up entirely of numbers!

Literacy

During this block we have continued our learning in creative writing, really focusing on descriptive language and how to create a picture in the reader's mind. For some lessons, we worked backwards, watching a short silent movie about a whale trying to save the ocean from plastic pollution. Children used this to create a comic strip of the story and then created a descriptive, imaginative story to compliment the video. Scroll through the pictures to see some examples of our amazing work!

Reading continues to be a huge focus in our classroom.  Children are given daily opportunities to read for enjoyment, exploring books from our own class library and the school's extensive library, as well as weekly group discussions about books used in our reading groups.

Other curricular areas

In the afternoons we have been exploring other curricular areas such as music, social studies, health and wellbeing and art.

Children did a superb job presenting their sea creature research task to the rest of the class! We learned so much about lots of different sea creatures (including dolphins, Japanese spider crabs, sailfish, narwhals and orcas) and we were so impressed with the variety of methods used to present the information!

We have also started looking at plastic pollution, particularly in our oceans. So far we have learned about the effects of plastic pollution to all of the sea creatures and how all of the rubbish finds its way to our oceans. Over the coming weeks, we will explore what we can do to prevent plastic pollution.
