Primary 4A Class blog -May/June 23

Welcome Back!

Welcome back to P4A's final blog of the year! We hope you enjoy seeing what we have been up to over the past month. 😊

Literacy Learning

Our literacy learning this block has focused on recount writing – with all the bank holidays we have had lots to write about! We have worked on using adjectives in our extended writing and including lots of detail to make our piece interesting to the reader. We even become police officers for the morning and imagined scenarios for us to give a recount of. Miss Guy couldn’t believe the quality of our work!

We have also spent time looking at inferences during our reading. We have learned to use the clues in the text and pictures so help us answer inferential questions. We have finished our class novel, The Creakers which we all thoroughly enjoyed. Our new class novel, Space Band by the same author, Tom Fletcher, looks like it’ll be just as good!

We have also worked on our talking and listening skills by listening and taking notes on each other’s Interesting Plants presentations. We’ve working on projecting our voice, looking at the audience, and being respectful audience members.

Numeracy Learning

We have covered a lot of tricky maths recently and have all coped with the challenge excellently. Some of us have been looking at angles – we can now identify straight, right, acute and obtuse angles and are able to work out the size of a missing angle on a right or straight angle. We enjoyed using K-Nex to show Miss Guy the different types of angles that we know!

We have also looked at capacity and created our own Hogwarts potions using a variety of magical ingredients. We carefully measured out each ingredient and calculated how much liquid we had altogether. Because we used different jugs with different intervals, we had to be careful when measuring to make sure we didn’t pour too much liquid!

Our addition and subtraction skills have also improved. We’ve worked hard to develop our understanding of place value which has helped up when doing chimney sums with large numbers. As always, we keep practising our times tables!

Other Curricular Areas

Over the past few weeks we have loved learning about the life cycle of plants. We have explored what plants needs to survive and carried out an investigation to see if they really need these things. We split up into groups and all planted seeds in different conditions; some plants didn’t get water, some didn’t get oxygen, and some didn’t get light. The results were similar to what we expected, but we were shocked at how yellow and tall the plants with no light grew as they tried to search for the sun. We also looked at different methods of seed dispersal and created our own exploding seedpods!

With Miss Johnstone, we have been learning how medicine can be used safely. We have talked about how to identify key information, what to do in an unsafe situation and enjoyed acting out some scenarios. We have also been creating create artwork by taking inspiration from other artists – we created amazing Van Gough inspired sunflowers and Andy Warhol inspired pop-art.

In PE, we have been focussing on our fitness skills. Have a look through the pictures to see what we have been up to!

Construction

Another month has brought more amazing constructions! P4a are very proud to show off all that they have imagined and constructed!
