Primary 4A Class Blog - January 23

Miss Guy and Miss Guthrie

Welcome back!

Welcome back to P4A's class blog!

We have had a great few weeks in class since coming back from the Winter Break, and have taken part in lots of exciting and interesting learning which we are excited to share with you!

We hope you enjoy! 😄

Literacy Learning

In our writing this term, we started looking at interesting characters in a story and then used that to help us create our own interesting characters. Firstly, we listened to a story. Then, we worked together to add our thoughts about the characters, word choice and writer's message to spider diagrams. We shared this with the rest of the class and then created our own interesting characters in our own creative stories! We were able to use lots of effective words and describe the character's actions, what they were like and how they felt.

During our reading, we have been looking at fact and opinion. We are all now able to identify fact and opinion in our reading books and have also been able to come up with our own.

We also managed to finish our class novel last week, The Song of the Dolphin Boy. We really enjoyed learning about the effects of plastic on the animals in the ocean and seeing how the main character, Finn, was able to save the local dolphins with the help of his new friends, the Lighthouse Crew. We are now all thinking about what we want our new class novel to be, and will update you in our next blog!

Numeracy Learning

We have enjoyed lots of great maths learning over the past few weeks, learning about money, time, multiplication and division, 3D objects, place value and loads more!

When learning about money, we worked collaboratively with others in the class to create a dinner menu! As we were only given a certain amount of money, we had to use our budgeting skills to make sure everyone at the party had enough food, but also that we didn't spent more money than we had. We did really well and create some super exciting menus!

A lot of us have worked particularly hard over the past few weeks to improve our times tables knowledge and our multiplication and division skills. We have looked at fact families and were able to complete the family when only given one multiplication or division statement, and have used concrete resources such as counters to help us see real life application of multiplication and division. We have recently started looking at remainders and the bus stop method of division.

We have also been learning about time and have even been able to tell the time to the nearest minute, as well as how to add and subtract large numbers using chimney sums!

Other Curricular Areas

PE and Music

In PE this term we have been focussing on Hockey. We had great fun working on our dribbling and passing skills by playing games of hockey battleships! Everyone was able to work well as a team by passing and moving during a game of hockey. P4a were very competitive and had a great fun using all we had learned to play effectively.

P4 continue to enjoy our fortnightly music sessions with Mrs Lyall. We have been learning about recognising and using time signatures as well as identifying a range of  notes and rhythms. We loved listening to Saint Saen’s Carnival of the Animals and identifying what animals were being portrayed in the music.

Scottish Art

This term we have been learning about famous Scottish designers. P4 were able to work effectively with their partners to research Andy Scott (who designed the Kelpies!) They also loved researching Gillian Kyle and creating their own Scottish food themed art inspired by her work involving Tunnock’s tea cakes and caramel wafers. We designed our own tartan using oil pastels and used Scottish words to create our own pop art.
