October 2022

Welcome to our monthly Class Blog update! Read the information below to find out what we have been doing in October.

Literacy and Languages

In Literacy, the children are continuing to read and engage with a range of texts throughout the day. The children love story time after interval each day and being involved in reading and retelling the story. They are continuing to develop fluency and understanding of what they are reading and are applying this skill when sounding out and spelling words. We have been working hard on our letter formation and ordering the alphabet, using this knowledge to then help us as we read and write.

The children are continuing to develop their tools for reading. This month, they have been learning how to make connections with what they have been reading. This is helping the children to develop a greater understanding of what they have read and developing an ability to recognise the 'hidden messages' behind some of their favourite stories.

In writing, we are using our Space context for learning as a stimulus for the children's creative writing. There have been lots of wonderful stories written about an astronaut travelling to the moon and what they get up to when they arrive (lots of the children have written about themselves being the astronauts)!

Numeracy and Maths

The children are continuing to develop mental strategies through Number Talks. We have recently learned to count on and back and are extending this to making 10s and bridging to 10. Recently, the children have been finding a target number using only numbers given to us. It has been lovely to see the children working with their allocated learning partners to find solutions and share together to support the understanding of their classmates.

The children have been working hard on sequencing the days of the week and months of the year. Lots of the children are challenging themselves to record dates as a 6 digit number, which is great!

The children love any opportunity to play games linked with maths and have particularly enjoyed opportunities to create their own games and play them with one another.

Other Curricular Areas

The children have enjoyed learning about Space as our class context for learning. They have recently learned about the different phases of the moon and can explain what causes the moon to change shape throughout the month.

The children recently enjoyed a visit from Mrs Kumar to find out more about the celebration of Diwali. They used what they had learned to create some eye-catching rangoli patterns of their own!

In PE, both Primary 2 classes have worked hard with Mr Milligan and Mrs Allan to develop their ball skills and applying this within a range of throwing and catching activities. We have recently began learning about rebound games and working together as a team to succeed.
