February 2023

Welcome to our monthly Class Blog update. Read the information below to find out what we have been doing in February

Literacy and Languages

In Literacy, the children have continued to make excellent progress in reading, writing and listening and talking across the curriculum.

In reading, the children have recently started to focus on responding to questions linked with what they have read. They will be looking at the 5Ws for questions, using the wording from the questions to shape their responses and using what they have learned to create their own questions. This has linked in with their listening and talking activities, where they have linked their learning with questioning to play games where good questions are essential to winning (Guess the Number, Guess Who etc).

The children are continuing to developing their tools for reading through our Daily Literacy Learning (DLL) programme. Miss Harris, Mrs Bradshaw and I have been conducting reading assessments over the last few weeks and have been really impressed at the children's continued development of their fluency, with lots of children beginning to incorporate expression as they read. Thank you, as always, for your support with developing your children's tools for reading at home.

The concept of questioning has also permeated through writing within the class. When creating texts, the children are considering the elements of 'wonderful writing' and The children have been working hard to enhance the texts they are creating through including a broader range of language. They have enjoyed learning about adjectives and using new words to describe aspects within their writing. I have been really impressed by the children's use of vocabulary for their age and stage!

The children are continuing to seize opportunities throughout the day to write texts - this month, it has been lots of shopping lists and doctor notes in the role play area, Valentines cards and creating posters, to name a few!

Numeracy and Maths

In Number Talks, the children have focused particularly on strategies linked with missing number calculations. This is strengthening the children's understanding of addition and subtraction processes, where they are selecting their preferred mental strategies to help them solve problems. The children are also beginning to tackle simple word problems and have really enjoyed the additional challenge this has provided them with. It has been lovely to see the excellent paired working between children and their learning partners, and the considerate, supportive interactions they are having with one another.

The children continue to develop their knowledge across a range of new and familiar concepts. Our recent topics covered in class have included place value, measuring weight, measuring capacity and telling the time. The children have really benefited from being able to apply what they have learned in their lives beyond the classroom, and enjoy sharing opportunities that they have had at home linking with what they have learned at school (e.g. counting money, weighing and measuring ingredients in recipes etc).

Other Curricular Areas

In PE, the children are continuing to develop their fitness during outdoor PE sessions and are extending their learning in gymnastics during indoor PE sessions. We have read lots of stories in class recently linked with

We have recently started our Human Body context for learning. The children have started learning about the brain and the skeleton. They have really enjoyed turning our role play area into a hospital and learning about the different body organs and their functions. I have been really impressed with the children's questions that have been generated when planning our context for learning within our floorbook.

In Art and Design, the children have been continuing to develop their use of different colours, textures and other media to create their art. The children are currently in the middle of creating their own 'germ art' projects linked with our current context for learning. Primary 2 Bravo continue to exude rich creative talent across the curriculum - the paintings of rainbows from E and H are great examples of this!

Here are some more snaps of this hardworking bunch in February...
