March 2023

Welcome to our monthly Class Blog update. Read the information below to find out what we have been doing in March

Literacy and Languages

In Literacy and English, the children have continued to make excellent progress in reading, writing and listening and talking across the curriculum. In reading, we are continuing to develop our responses to questions and using strategies such as skimming and scanning to find the information that we need. It was lovely to speak with the parents at our recent parent consultations about the progress the children have made, particularly in their ability to read and their fluency as they read. Thank you for continuing to read at home with your children to support them in their journey as readers.

Across the aspects of the Literacy and English curriculum, the children have been learning about fact and opinion and how to differentiate between the two. True to this class's creative form, there have been lots of interesting examples of facts and opinions shared! This has been transferred into the children's persuasive writing, where the children have been learning how to use language to persuade their reader to support their own point of view.  Mrs Allan and I loved reading the letters from both classes after we had decided to lock away some of their most enjoyed play resources. The children were then tasked with writing persuasive letters to us - we were very impressed!

Solo talk season is again underway in Primary 2, and we are really looking forward to hearing the children's presentations on their preferred fact and opinion topic. The children are continuing to enhance their listening and talking skillset by taking questions linked with their presentations and responding to them, using the wording from the questions to help them answer with both clarity and confidence.

We will be resuming the Daily Literacy Learning (DLL) programme when we return after the Spring Holiday. Miss Harris, Mrs Bradshaw, Mrs Allan and I have been busy organising our new rotations and texts for the different groups. We are confident the children will really enjoy the new texts and activities as look forward to seeing their continued development as fluent, expressive and confident readers.

Numeracy and Maths

In Number Talks, we have focused particularly on strategies linked with subtraction and recognising the different ways we can solve a calculation. The children continue to enjoy tackling simple word problems and have started creating their own for their peers to solve. I have been really impressed by the children's understanding in Numeracy and Maths over the year, particularly their knowledge of how numbers are constructed and the addition and subtraction processes.

Lots of our children have recently been learning about different ways to present data, which has led to lots of different surveys being carried out and has linked well with our Literacy learning in asking and responding to questions.

Thank you for continuing to support your children by providing them with opportunities to apply their mathematical understanding at home and beyond.

Other Curricular Areas

In PE, the children are learning strategies to enhance their performance during team games when participating in PE sessions outdoors (changing movement, sharing energy etc). As part of their learning with Mrs Cairns, they are currently learning about athletics during indoor PE sessions.

The children have loved learning about the Human Body and we really enjoyed seeing the different projects the children brought in to share facts about their chosen human body organ. Thank you for all your support at home with this.

In Art and Design, the children have been developing their experience of using mixed media within their artwork and how they can use artistic elements (colour, line and texture) to bring their pieces to life. Our recent Spring projects have been of an excellent standard - I have been blown away by the children's creativity!

As part of British Science week, our 'connections' focus has been on electricity. The children have loved creating circuits of their own and have been very curious as to what materials they can use as conductors. I wonder if we have a few future scientists in the class!

Parent visitors

Our recent learning about the Human Body was well and truly enriched by our parent visitors coming in to chat with our Primary 2 classes about their roles in the nursing, medical and dental professions. A massive thank you to Joshua, Jackson, Lewis, Evie and Eva's parents for coming in to see us (and for answering the wealth of questions from our children). The children loved hearing about the different roles and getting to see the different props on offer!

I will leave you with some photos of this hardworking bunch throughout the month of March.

I hope you have a wonderful Spring break when it comes and look forward to a lovely final term with Primary 2 Bravo when we return. Hopefully with lots of sunny weather...!
