Paul Stephenson was a civil rights activist who fought for the rights and equality of black people. The action he took inspired many other people.
In 1963, Paul Stephenson with the help of the West Indian Development Council led the Bristoll Bus Boycott. The Boycott lasted four months until the company eventually backed down and overturned is discriminatory ban upon hiring people of colour.
Paul Stephenson was born in Rochford, Essex on May 6th 1937. Sadly at the young age of 3 he had to evacuate his home due to the catastrophe of World War II.

The racism was so bad even his teacher said to him, ` Why are you looking so black? `. Racism was very bad in the 20th century.

Their protests led to the end of 'the colour bar' which banned Black and Asian people from driving buses.

Paul Stephenson has won the west African and Caribbean council community achievers award in 1996 and the city's councils , 'One person can make a difference ' award in 2006. In 2007, Stephenson was granted the Freedom of the City of Bristol, being the first black person to be so honoured.
