The Lost Colony

By Megan O'Brien

The story of the lost colony known as Roanoke has been passed down by generations since 1590. In 1587, one hundred and twenty English settlers made the attempt to settle on the island that was known as Roanoke. This had not been the first attempt to settle in Roanoke. In the late 1500s, another group of settlers tried to turn Roanoke into their home, but because they were not allies with England and due to the shortage of food and the attacks of Indian Tribes, this group had to relocate. Years later, a new group dared to try and settle on the land. The King/Ruler of this colony was the first-born child of English parents in North America whom was known as John White. Him and his family, including his wife, pregnant daughter, and other friends, began their new attempt at civilization. At the beginning everything was great. They had what they needed to survive and they used every last bit of it. But the time came when someone had to take the journey back to England for more supplies. As the leader of the colony, John White took on the task and made his way back to England. While White was in England, the war between England and Spain was about to take place, causing White to be trapped in England for three years. After these three long years, White was finally able to make his trip from England back to North America. When he arrived back in Roanoke, he couldn’t believe his eyes. Everything and everyone was gone. The only thing left was a totem pole with the engraving “Croatoan,” which was the name of a small Native American group known in the area. To this day, no one knows what happened to the colony, including its people and everything else within it. Some speculate that the people of the colony joined the friendly Croatoan people or may have been massacred by the unfriendly Wanchese Tribe. No one knows, and no one might ever know; it’s a long lost story.

"The word 'Croatoan' engraved into a tree and being the last know thing found on the colony of Roanoke."
