Scholarships to Consider
Catherine Luquetta
Class of 2022: Now is the time to start considering scholarships to help pay for tuition at different universities/institutions. I have listed 2 scholarships that can help pay for many things that are necessary for college. I have also linked the website that will give you more information on the following scholarships.
The Posse Foundation
About: The Posse Foundation tries to recruit diverse groups of leaders who transform communities. One of the three goals for Posse is to expand the pool from which top colleges and universities can recruit young leaders from diverse backgrounds. A second goal for Posse is to help institutions build more of an interactive campus so that the community is more welcoming to people of all backgrounds. The last goal is that the Posse Scholars continue working on the academic studies so they can take leadership roles in their workforce in the future.
Qualifications:
The student must...
be a high school senior
be nominated by their high school
be in the first semester of their senior year
demonstrate leadership within their high school, community, or family
demonstrate academic potential
The Posse Scholarship is neither a minority nor a need-based scholarship. It is open to all students of all backgrounds.
The Gates Scholarship
About: The Gates Scholarship is a highly selective, last-dollar scholarship for outstanding, minority, high school seniors from low-income households. Each year, the scholarship is awarded to 300 of these student leaders with the intent of helping them realize their maximum potential. Scholars that are awarded this award will receive the full cost of attendance that is not covered by financial aid and the EFC (Expected Family Contribution).
Qualifications:
The student must...
be a high school senior
be at least one of the following ethnicities: African-American; American Indian/Alaska Native; Asain & Pacific Islander American; and/or Hispanic American
be Pell-eligible
be a U.S. citizen, national, or permanent resident
be in good academic standing with a minimum cumulative weighted GPA of 3.3 on a 4.0 scale (or equivalent)
Additionally, students who consider applying must plan to enroll full-time in a four-year degree program at a U.S. accredited, not-for-profit, private or public college or university.
Los Angeles students now attending Grinnelle College received the Posse Scholarship for their leadership roles throughout their high school years.
