The material in this course introduces the student to the basics of Spanish communication, linguistics, and Hispanic culture. Students will practice listening and pronunciation skills. Students will be able to read and write on an elementary level, as they learn basic Spanish vocabulary and grammar. Successful completion of this course will ensure that students can communicate and comprehend the Spanish language at a (sufficient) level to qualify for Spanish II studies.

The concepts studied are important because they provide the basic knowledge necessary to communicate in the Spanish language and to appreciate a variety of aspects of Hispanic culture. This course stresses continual use of the Spanish language through short stories, mini-novels, listening activities, conversations, and music. Grammatical structures appropriate to this level of study are integrated throughout the course as well as a variety of cultural topics. A strong emphasis is placed on both listening and reading and students are to accurately produce the language through speaking and writing. Students in Spanish III will continue to learn intermediate to advanced structures. Reading, writing, speaking, and listening/comprehending will be stressed, and students will be expected to read and write at an intermediateadvanced level, and be conversational after completing the course.

Grammatical structures appropriate to this level of study are integrated throughout the course as well as a variety of cultural topics. A strong emphasis is placed on both listening and reading and students are to accurately produce the language through extensive speaking and writing. Spanish IV enriches the vocabulary and grammar of the student beyond their third year of study. Conversational abilities of the student are expanded through the use of Spanish in the classroom.

Both textbook and authentic materials used to enable students to express themselves on a variety of topics concerning self, family, friends, and their communities. Reading, writing, listening, and speaking combined to explore the history, geography, music, arts, and film of Hispanic society. This course will be taught in a hybrid, face-to-face and online modality. This course is equivalent to SPAN 103 - Intermediate Spanish from Shippensburg University and is appropriate for students who have completed Spanish III at EPAHS.

This course offers conversational activities that will prepare the students to interact in social situations and to handle simple transactions. The students in this course will be able to ask and answer simple questions demonstrating good control of the language and using communicative strategies. The students will be required to read, to view or to listen to authentic materials and produce oral and short written reports. This course follows the ACTFL proficiency standards and therefore, at the end the students should demonstrate proficiency at the Intermediate-Mid level through an oral interview. This course will be taught in Spanish. This course will be taught in a hybrid, face-to-face and online modality. This course is equivalent to SPAN 202 - Intermediate Conversation from Shippensburg University and is appropriate for students who have completed Spanish IV at EPAHS.

French I is an introduction to commonly used French expressions and vocabulary. Students will learn how to talk about themselves, things they like to do, the time and weather, food, clothing, and animals. Students will also learn about aspects of French culture, such as famous places, customs, and holidays, all while interacting with the language in an authentic manner through conversations, projects, and traditional assessments. The course provides the student with the skills to read, write, and converse in French at a basic level.

French II is an expansion of commonly used French expressions and vocabulary, with a deeper look at the grammar of the language. Students will learn how to talk about what they will do in the future and what they did in the past; they will also learn how to describe others, give directions, talk about school, food, professions, and their houses. Students will also learn about aspects of French culture, such as the French school system and various French speaking cities, all while interacting with the language in an authentic manner through conversations, written assignments, projects, and traditional assessments. The course provides the student with the skills to read, write, and converse in French at a low-intermediate level.

French III continues to utilize the vocabulary and structure acquired in the first two levels of French while expanding on students’ ability to communicate at a high level through speaking and writing. Students will learn a variety of new tenses and pronouns used in the French language, while also exploring topics such as travel, furniture, cooking, accidents, and chores. Students will learn about aspects of French culture, such as common products of France and famous French people, all while interacting with the language in an authentic manner through conversations, writing assignments, projects, reading short stories, and traditional assessments. The course provides the student with the skills to read, write, and converse in French at an high-intermediate level.

French IV uses the vocabulary, structure, and grammar acquired in the first three levels of French as a springboard for discussion and exploration of French history, literature, art, and geography. Students will learn more tenses to increase their ability to speak and write at a high level in the language, while exploring topics such as health, architecture, French slang, and travel. Students will learn about aspects of French culture through reading novels, researching artists, watching movies, and studying famous French people, all while interacting with the language in an authentic manner through informal conversations, writing assignments, speaking assignments, and traditional assessments. The course provides the student with the skills to read, write, and converse in French at a low-advanced level.

Designated to promote and improve speaking and listening comprehension skills in the language through explorations of various contemporary media. Utilizing radio and television broadcasts, Internet materials, video, film, and audio programs and the tradition of printed text, students consider current topics of interest through discussion, debate and oral presentations. Special attention given to vocabulary building and improving students’ oral/aural proficiency. This course will be taught in a hybrid, face-to-face and online modality. This course is equivalent to FREN 202 - Intermediate Conversation Through the Media from Shippensburg University and is appropriate for students who have completed French IV at EPAHS.
