Naval Science I introduces students to the meaning of citizenship, the elements of leadership, the value of scholarship in attaining life goals, and engenders a sound appreciation for the heritage and traditions of America. It includes an introduction to leadership; naval customs and traditions; naval ships; their missions and organizations. Students will take field trips, learn to drill, be involved in community activities, and have the opportunity to participate in a variety of extracurricular activities.

Naval Science II challenges students to continue to develop traits of citizenship, leadership, responsibility, selfdiscipline, and appreciation for the heritage and traditions of America. It includes leadership; naval history through World War II; naval ships and ship board evolution; naval weaponry; meteorology; navigation fundamentals; small boat seamanship; and survival training.

Naval Science III continues to develop the trait of leadership in students and introduces them to military justice and international law, while continuing the instruction of naval science curriculum including astronomy; navigation and naval history including interrelationship of sea power; and national security.
For students who complete Naval Science III, this course will count in place of both Global Political Systems and American Government courses.

Naval Science IV continues to develop students’ leadership traits with a more in-depth study of leadership traits, principles and practices including the study of human motivation, group dynamics, effective communication, and the authority and moral responsibility of Naval leaders. The course is oriented toward individual study with the students gaining leadership experience by assuming leadership positions in the other three Naval Science courses.

Prerequisite Recommendation: NJROTC Instructor Approval
Students may utilize NJROTC Waiver as .5 credits toward their Fitness and Wellness requirement. Sophomores and juniors may have this .5 credit applied toward their following years’ Fitness and Wellness (PE) requirement after successful participation in NJROTC PT. This option may only be used one time during either their junior or senior year. NJROTC Waiver classes will not be calculated in GPA and class rank.
