Status:
Following the proof of concept presentation, the team had an additional meeting with the project sponsor to get feedback on the final design. With the exception of the base design, he approved the concept design. The local team members met this week to purchase parts to fabricate a spar section and determine appropriate tolerancing for machined base. Tom was consulted on possible precision cutting on the PVC spar sections and confirmed base could be fabricated from the desired 316 stainless steel. The team anticipates having all parts in and finalizing the construction of the entire spar mooring by the beginning of week 8. How to best assemble it and what hardware tests can be performed still need to be discussed
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Calculations were devisited after sponsor commented on inaccuracies (Add mass)
Finished the base design and ADV on solidworks
Overall design was approved by the sponsor.
Continued work on Final Report (Team)
First Draft of the report
Completed Proof of concept Presentation.
Prototype production was started. PVC was a finalized choice for spar material after deliberation with sponsor regarding the low availability and costliness of 6’’ID ABS pipe
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item).
Continue working on the prototype (Erik Zamarripa & Ayesha Riaz & Eliran Lenard)
Work on Final Report (Team)
Manufacturing the spar base (Team)
Purchase PVC, hose clamps, oscillating saw (or have machine shop do the precision cutting for the team, and purchase foam (Team)
Review and prepare purchasing documents (Horim Yu)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting (zoom meeting 2/03/21)
Approved the concept design
Each spar section (2m) is composed of ADV and flotation
The number of guy wires
Spar base design
Commented the calculation of wave and flow
Problem being addressed by reviewing the shallow water
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions (2/02/2021)
Discussed the nonlinearity of the spar
Recommended modeling the spar as a single cylinder
Compression/Tension on the spar
The principal stresses analysis on the spar
Discussion on stainless steel vs. Galvanized steel (Stainless steel was recommended)
Comments from Other Students in the Class (via email - 2/02/21)
Presentation feedback :
FEA analysis was thorough and detailed
Some slides have too much information
Concerns of validity of shallow water assumption for calculations of cross-shore force
In terms of anchoring of the guy wires to seabed
