Status:
Although the machine shop has had delays in returning all the PVC spar sections, we were able to retrieve one spar segment and the complete base mechanism for demonstration in the sponsor design review presentation. The spar segment has been completed with the ADV mount, probe holding fixture, and buoyant foam and was tested for deflection. Tests showed the PVC was more than strong enough to withstand the maximum moments calculated from beam analysis despite the various holes and cutouts made on the pipe. Demonstrative videos and pictures were taken during the fabrication and will be included in the final report and website. There’s a likelihood we will not receive the rest of our project parts from the machine shop until the end of the week, and thus, the weekend will entail fabricating and completing the rest of the prototype to have the final deliverables ready for the sponsor during finals week. Preparations are being made for the various presentations and assignments due the next several days.
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Continued work on Final Report
Corrections from peer review comments were made on Final Report
Review of other team’s report and webpage was completed
Updated documentation on the website
Received essential manufactured parts from machine shop such as PVC pipes with holes and cutouts and full base mechanism
Made significant progress on the final prototype. The functionality of the whole spar mooring can be summarized using one spar section and base mechanism, which are currently completed
An actual ADV was loaned to the team by the sponsor
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Update and finish the complete final report and final team webpage (Team)
Begin working on and finish the Sponsor Design Review presentation scheduled for Friday 3/12/2021 @ 1:30pm (Team)
Complete extreme conditions calculations (Horim Yu and Erik Zamarripa)
Manufacture and assemble the complete final design prototype (Erik Zamarripa, Ayesha Riaz & Eliran Lenard)
Purchase the last necessary parts such as stainless steel rope, extra fasteners and additional foam solution (Erik Zamarripa, Ayesha Riaz & Eliran Lenard)
Prepare for Senior Design Day presentations (Team)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting(Zoom meeting 3/2/2021)
Discussed the ADV mount design, how to hold the probe in place on the spar and noted that the design we had was adequate and would like to see the rigidity of the fastened and mounted parts
Updated him with the current progress on the project - machine shop parts, report and webpage
Discussed plans for the presentation in week 10 and updated us with times he’d be available for it
Discussed the team meeting with professor Maziar regarding the FEA to resolve minor issues. He approved of the FEA figures generated and requested the team also find out the conditions for failure of the spar mooring, such as tsunami conditions
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting(Zoom meeting 3/2/2021)
Reminded us about lubrication for metal threaded parts and to be very careful using PVC cement due to its incredibly fast drying time (as it turns out, this did pose a problem during fabrication but was ultimately overcome)
Updated what materials have been purchased from Industrial Metal supply ( plate for the bottom base, rods for hinge, setting pins, etc) and clarified for the distinctions between different metals. Ensured all the parts that will be used are stainless steel
Discussed the current progress of the project regarding machine shop parts and found the progress to be sufficient, but noted there was much work needed once rest of parts are received and encouraged working diligently (as the team has continued to do)
Discussed presentation plans with the sponsor for week 10 as well as the senior day for finals week
Comments from Other Students in the Class (from 3/7/21)
Feedback from PDR presentation
Their simulations/analysis were pretty well done, and thorough. FEA analysis helps support the group's design decisions.
Great graphs, matlab modeling, and experiment video
Encouraged more energetic speaking from the presenters
Feedback from Webpage
Overall great job with everything, but there is some suggestions that
Better way to put the matlab code on the webpage
Upload a higher resolution picture of the Gantt chart
Feedback from Final report
Overall a well written report
Add more descriptions to the analysis figures and describe the physical background for calculations
Chapter 2 : be consistent using “Figure X”
Chapter 3 : unnecessary spacing, decrease the column width for table 3.4
Chapter 4 : for figure 4.4, organize 3 images using the matlab subplot.
Schedule
Describe upcoming milestone
