Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Trying to finalize the design of the frame, solenoid, etc.
Delivered Frame Materials to Tom --> Will start fabricating soon
All frame materials have been acquired
Accomplishments from Previous Week
More tests done on the design: Still not able to approach 1 Tesla
Further testing done through incorporating return paths of our system
Made some adjustments to the frame
Ran magnetic field density simulation for solenoid in two dimensions using finite element method magnetics.
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Continue modifying design to incorporate return paths, different experimental solenoid design (John)
Simulate the magnetic output using COMSOL of different configuration, optimize radius of solenoid (Tanner)
Continue testing to improve magnetic field density with different modifications, (Joe)
Research different methods of utilizing iron cores to improve magnetic field density (donut shaped iron core, etc.) (Everbrook)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Sponsor was ok with the team reducing the magnetic field density down to 0.01 Tesla in 2 dimensions instead of the originally request 1 Tesla. Wants one dimension to have 0.1 T to 0.2 T using a C-bar design (1/27/21 over Zoom).
option 3 + 1 detachable C bar (1/27/21 over Zoom).
Recreate solenoid core shape to become a "double ring" where a circular coil ring is inserted inside the solenoid (1/27/21 over Zoom).
Sponsor offered to provide the team with workspace and tools on campus if needed (1/27/21 over Zoom).
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
We took Tom's offer of giving us a frame material (Aluminum Plate)
Professor Qi recommended that the team include more data on their slides instead of just saying verbally what the team's findings were (1/21/21 over Zoom).
Chris Cassidy asked about safety features that were implemented to the project. The team responded by explaining that they plan to implement fuses and a kill switch (1/21/21 over Zoom).
Comments from Other Students in the Class (indicate date of comments and if via email or in person)
Students mentioned safety factor --> More critical if we decide to use non-MRI compatible materials as one of the return path options (1/23/21 over update form email).
Risks and Areas of Concern
Not being able to output 1 Tesla
Sponsor admitted this might be fine if we cannot achieve 1T
Possible adjustments to our design requirements
Design of solenoids needs to be finalized
Resources or Information Required but not Available
Schedule
Describe upcoming milestone
Update Gantt chart.
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
To date, the team has spent $353.79 which leaves a budget of $146.21left.
Sponsor maybe able to supply more funding if necessary
Progress on Report and Webpage
The team has been updating its webpage on a weekly basis and has been uploading updates to our report as required by course website deadlines.
