MAE 156B Week 6 Progress Report
Project Title: Locomotion Monitoring System for Mouse Cognitive Behavioral Task
Sponsor Name: Bloodgood Lab and Hnasko Lab
Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Motorized Impellers and structural components of air chamber and stand have been ordered
Fabrication will begin upon arrival of components
Disk will be handcut from low density closed cell phone. (more disk testing in progress)
Optical encoder housing design currently in progress
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Disk precisely cut out by hand
Motorized impellers for Hnasko and Bloodgood ordered
Design for Hnasko and Bloodgood labs finalized
80/20 for Bloodgood stand, Hnasko stand, and Hnasko air chamber ordered
Optical mouse encoder tested and successfully implemented
Report and website updated
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Finalize design of top and bottom perforated plates (Michal)
Purchase acrylic for air chamber (David)
Finalize liquid reward delivery system design (Philip)
Prepare for fabrication (Michal and David)
Update report and website (Jeff and Philip)
Design optical encoder housing (Jeff)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Confirmed that go/stop cues can be done through just the monitor
Clarified how mice drink when head fixed
A spout is fixed to be within range of the mouse’s tongue
No visual sign of reward delivery is necessary
Valve controls when reward flows
Bloodgood needs to be electrically quiet, hnasko does not need to be electrically quiet so they can use grounding
Don't need to monitor licking of bloodgood mouse
Confirmed table height is okay, track width should be around 6 in
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Last meeting did not take place due to presentations
Risks and Areas of Concern
Large disk may also need a counterweight
Lickometer may not be able to track licks in real time
Shock mounting impellers
Resources or Information Required but not Available
Capacitance of a mouse
Feasibility of grounding a mouse
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
$694.30 spent thus far
$2,805.70 remaining
