MAE 156B Week 3 Progress Report
Project Title: Locomotion Monitoring System for Mouse Cognitive Behavioral Task
Sponsor Name: Bloodgood Lab and Hnasko Lab
Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
Continuing analysis of Raspberry Pi environment - determining if using python scripts will be a bottleneck and if C/C++ programs might be too much work
Redesign of systems based on fans rather than pressure chamber in progress
Fabrication pending fan redesign
Tests of fan drag force must be conducted to determine feasibility (both to support disk and to offset mouse weight)
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Tethered raspberry pi to computer via android phone
Case design decisions made
Linear bearing analysis done
Fan enclosure CAD model made
Raspberry Pi boards purchased
Drag force analysis of disk conducted
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
Finish testing of fan powered base (Everyone)
Write “impact to society” section of report (Philip)
Finish design of fan powered base (Michal)
Place orders for fans, bearings, and other material (David)
Get optical mouse data from raspberry pi (Jeff)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
No concern from sponsors last meeting will update them on fan redesign this upcoming week
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Consider using fan(s) instead of pressurized air chamber
Drag analysis was performed for a disk
Last week was a presentation week, no formal instructor meeting
Risks and Areas of Concern
Cost of using equipment fans to float disk may be unfeasible (~$1500)
Cheaper fans may be too loud
Disk may not be rigid enough
Resources or Information Required but not Available
We need to know at which location the noise level (of 70dB) was sampled for the Hnasko Lab’s setup.
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
$193.79 spent thus far
$3,306.21 remaining
