MAE 156B Week 1 Progress Report
Project Title: Locomotion Monitoring System for Mouse Cognitive Behavioral Task
Sponsor Name: Bloodgood Lab and Hnasko Lab
Team Number: Team 7
Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.
The analysis of floating disk is complete. The next steps are to analyze horizontal air bearing and determine method of counterbalancing mouse’s weight.
The general design direction of the mouse treadmills for both labs has been agreed upon: a foam disk floating on a cushion of air. The next steps are to create the cad models for each mouse monitoring system.
Fabrication has yet to commence. The first steps will be to laser cut the large foam ring and the perforated plates.
The risk reduction prototype was found to be able to support the weight of two mice for low input pressures <20 psi in tests. The next tests will be of optical encoder performance and the counterbalance system.
Accomplishments from Previous Week
Performed risk reduction on air bearing
Able to spin disk with very low friction using two weights
Decided on final design of air chamber
Goals for Next Week (list names after each item). Use specific and measurable objectives.
CAD Model of proposed design (Michal & Philip)
Fabrication and test of horizontal air bearing (David & Jeffrey)
Sponsor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Sponsors confirmed that they were on board with the disk design
Instructor Comments from Last Meeting and Actions Taken to Address these Comments
Instructor said to use neoprene or silicone closed cell foam, investigation into prices of such options was conducted. $32 for 1.5” x 12” x 56” sheet of neoprene closed cell foam.
Risks and Areas of Concern
Radial bearing implementation
Noise of air system
Resources or Information Required but not Available
Design guidelines and analysis for air bearing systems are desired. More information about the dimensions of the head mounting system and liquid reward and monitoring system are also necessary to inform the design of the mouse monitoring systems.
Budget (list amount spent and amount remaining)
Spent: $93.93
Remaining: $3,406.07
