MAE 156B Week 5 Progress Report

Project Title: Locomotion Monitoring System for Mouse Cognitive Behavioral Task

Sponsor Name: Bloodgood Lab and Hnasko Lab

Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.

• • Lickometer will use laser pointer and photoresistor to create beam that is broken by ball bearings in water spout

  • Quarter inch acrylic will make up walls of box, they are reinforced by extra extruded aluminum beams

  • Disk will be cut in parts on laser cutter and glued together

  • Acrylic will be purchased from Urey hall

Accomplishments from Previous Week

• • Designed and modeled lickometer system and liquid reward delivery system

  • Tested whether counterweight was necessary

  • Ordered components for frame of air chamber

  • Obtained monitor for visual cues

  • Flow analysis performed for disk lifting

  • Cork sheet ordered for gaskets

• • Consider buying a perforated acrylic sheet and blocking holes that are not needed

    • Perforated acrylic sheet unfortunately was found to not considerably decrease fabrication time

  • Investigate using AC Blowers

    • Consulted with Steve; he recommended against using AC motors

• • Inertia of large disk may be too large

  • Large disk may also need a counterweight

  • Lickometer may not be able to track licks in real time
