MAE 156B Week 4 Progress Report

Project Title: Locomotion Monitoring System for Mouse Cognitive Behavioral Task

Sponsor Name: Bloodgood Lab and Hnasko Lab

Overview of Status of Analysis, Design, Fabrication, Tests, etc.

• • Python programs and shell scripts will be used to gather position data

  • Blower will be used to lift disk

  • Bending tests done on disk

  • Lickometer will use IR break beam

  • Decided on acrylic for material of walls

Accomplishments from Previous Week

• • Tested lifting capacity of air hockey table

  • Top plate deflection analysis performed

  • Extracted position data from optical mouse using raspberry pi

  • Ordered samples of linear bearings

• • Finish design of lickometer and liquid reward delivery system (Philip)

  • Finalize design for Bloodgood and Hnasko air chamber designs (Michal)

  • Finalize disk design, follow up with finding suitable laser cutter, start CAD for gasket, applicable standards section of report (David)

  • Determine resolution of optical mouse encoder, purchase monitor and optical mouse (Jeff)

  • Hnasko lab specified that they wanted a 15” monitor for visual cues

    • Suitable computer monitor was found

• • Air chamber is ok if pressure is below 0.5 psi

  • Lab Compressed Dry Air (CDA) may not have sufficient flow rate for our purposes

    • Power source switched from compressed air line to blower

Risks and Areas of Concern

• • Disk needs to be very rigid yet also light

  • Weight of air chamber for Bloodgood lab will make it hard to transport

  • Accuracy and precision of lickometer has yet to be proven

• • Communication protocol from raspberry pi and host computer

  • 3’ by 3’ laser cutter would reduce manufacturing time if it was available
