William Butler Yeats was born in 1865 Dublin, Ireland and died in 1939. He grew up in Ireland and England and studied art. However, he soon realized he had a passion for poetry. Yeats was part of the Celtic Revival movement and wanted to preserve Irish culture and heritage. The movement was opposed to English rule and cultural influence in Ireland. In his poetry there are aspects Irish pride and folklore. However it still had a pessimistic view. Yeats poetry was largely influenced by modernist movements as well as the symbolist movement . His poetry contained vivid imagery and simpler language. However, he still continued with the traditional structure and did not use free verse. Yeats was also a playwright and founded a theater in Ireland. Today he is still remembered as a cultural leader of Ireland's history. He was awarded the Noble Prize in 1923 and is one of the best poets of the 20th century.
