James Joyce was born in 1882 in Dublin to a poor father who failed at many professions and a dedicated Catholic Church mother who was a pianist. Even though the family experienced poverty Joyce had a good education at numerous private schools. He was interested in the arts and became a professional writer while he was still in school .In 1902 he moved to Paris and became a teacher and Journalist, but had economic troubles. Soon he published numerous works that where received very well. Those include Dubliners (a collection of short stories) in 1914, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man in 1916, Exiles (a play) in 1918, and Ulysses in 1922. Joyce was a leader of the modernist prose movement in Great Britain. His writing which involved using language to show the characters psychological state and experimentation in his work led the way to post modernism. He was a very influential figure many post modernist authors and is considered one of the most influential writers of twentieth century . Joyce died in 1941 , which was also the last year of the modern era.
