I believe that students learn by working on their skills in different ways, such as doing different activities to build up on a skill. I also believe that they learn but understanding one concept before moving up to another, more intense skill. It is also easier for most to be doing some interactive lessons because it keeps their attention as well as gives students a way to work out situations themselves and with classmates.
I believe that students need to build basic skills in traditional concepts such as reading, writing, mathematics, and social and earth sciences. Along with those, I believe that students should be able to discover and improve on passions. Finally, I think that education should include skills to help develop healthy habits such as coping mechanisms, how to stay healthy mentally and physically, and how to interact with others.
Students should be taught using a mix of methods to accommodate to all types of learning. For example, when teaching a lesson use both a small lecture as well as photos and hands on activities and group work. This gives students multiple explanations and ways of learning, and will reach more students rather than just a lecture.
I believe that students learn best when they are comfortable in their environment. In a place that students feel safe and secure as well as validated. I also believe that decorations make the environment feel a little more personal and overall can change the entire vibe of the room. A teacher who makes the room their own can show that the teacher wants to be there as well which can make for a better attitude towards the class and overall learning. Finally, a sense of togetherness in the classroom can make a student more comfortable and want to work with others. Group activities and the ability to talk to others can help students feel comfortable around their peers. All of these can help make a student want to be in the classroom and learn.
There are many qualities that make up a good teacher, and these are the ones I believe are most important. Compassion, respect, trust, and a sense of high expectations for each student. I think that when there is a solid bond between students and teacher, students are more likely to have a want to learn. It also helps when the teacher is enthusiastic about what they want to teach because it makes learning a better experience. Though it also helps when a teacher does enforce the rules through discipline, but not in a harsh manor. Following through gives students a feel for how the real world is, actions have consequences. A teacher should also be able to give knowledge and build upon skills that fit both the students needs, and the department of education's needs.
