My name is Lily Scarbrough and I am working towards becoming an elementary teacher. I chose to become a teacher because growing up I babysat neighborhood kids and realized how much I enjoyed working with them. I knew I wanted to be in a profession where I was helping children. In high school, I took Teachers for Tomorrow, a course on education, and realized I loved teaching when performing my in class observations. I love that teaching gives me both a creative outlet and a sense of growing young minds.
Some attributes that make me a good teacher are that I am creative. This will help make learning fun as well as help me come up with project ideas that will make children excited to learn and work. I also have a strong work ethic when it comes to things that I am passionate about. This means that I would move mountains for these children to see these kids succeed.
Some of the experiences I have working with children include babysitting for neighborhood kids and family friends. I also did charity work in an elementary school in Guatemala. Along with this I was a lifeguard for two years in high school and interacted with kids and families daily. I have also been working as a health care attendant for an elementary aged boy with Cerebral Palsy.
Some of my long-term goals are my aspiration to get my teaching license. I also hope to be teaching my own class one day. I want to positively impact the children I teach. I want to make a difference by helping kids want to learn. I do not want to make them feel that learning is dreadful. I want to also help them grow into wonderful people. I want them to able to look back and think of me as someone who helped them become who they are in the future. I would also like to make them feel important. As a child, knowing that I was important to people and that I mattered helped me a lot, especially during hard times. I want them to know that they are not alone.
