5 Methods for Assessing Students

1. Benchmark testing is one of the methods to assess where students are. This is mainly used to assess students' knowledge at the beginning, middle, and end of the year. Benchmark testing can also be used before and after units to see what students learned and what they are still struggling with. Benchmark testing is good for planning out how to take on a unit and the school year.

2. A literacy log is a good way to track a student's growth in reading. A literacy log is somewhere students can write what books they have read and their understanding of what happened in the book. It is a good way for students to work on reading and writing.

3. Observation is another way to assess students. This can be done by watching students to see where their strengths and weaknesses are. This can easily be done during independent work time or through small groups when you're one-on-one with a few students. This can help assess what students need to learn in order to continue on successfully.

4. Projects are a fun way to assess students. Through a project, students can showcase their skills and what they learned. It also allows for creativity and is an activity that can be fun for the class. It also allows for seeing what students know and how they use that knowledge to succeed.

5. Standardized testing is one of the most common ways students are assessed. Mainly done through statewide tests, standardized testing is a way to see what the students know based off of a list of expectations. Standards of learning for each state set the basis for what students need to learn in each grade throughout the year. This can help keep track of where students are based on their knowledge of these subjects.
