EGHS Sustainable Agriculture and Green Education (SAGE) Academy

The Elk Grove Sustainable Agriculture and Green Education (SAGE) Academy prepares students for the 21st-century agricultural industry. Learn about the exciting sciences and technologies necessary to produce food and fiber in an energy-efficient manner. Students will choose an elective that caters to their personal interest: Agricultural Mechanics, Floral Design, Animal Science, Outdoor Recreation, Agriculture Leadership and Communications, and Agriscience. Students get to participate in Supervised Agricultural Experience projects through Future Farms of America (FFA) and use their knowledge to work with and alongside animals.

Career Technical Education Classes

SAGE Course Recruitment

Career technical education involves preparing students for their entrance into college and the workplace with an emphasis on the Agriculture Industry. The classes are designed to create students into professionals and experts in these core areas, especially if the pathways shown below are followed. The skills and knowledge learned in these courses will provide students with valuable and tangible qualities to help them succeed in their future career choices.

To start in our SAGE Academy, students their Sophomore year must be enrolled in the SAGE Ag Chemistry course AND an agriculture elective (listed below). They will continue within the academy by taking the next level of the SAGE science course AND continuing with another agriculture elective. SAGE students obtain first priority in grade level class field trips, are scheduled into group SAGE History and English classes for collaboration and community, and have the opportunity to participate in SAGE events.

Floral Design

In this elective course pathway students will explore the floriculture industry on a more technical and advanced level. Students will expand upon their creative expression, aesthetic valuing, perceptions and historical and cultural context. The art elements and principles of floral design will serve as a foundation for each unit. Students will be exposed to wedding and event planning, including floral consultation, construction and set up. The Floral I class counts as a UC/CSU Visual and Performing Arts class (f).

Welding and Fabrication Pathway

This elective course pathway emphasizes welding safety, weld designs, basic framing, oxygen/acetylene welding and brazing, oxygen gas cutting, arc welding, arc air cutting, pipe welding, hard surfacing, weld testing, metal identification, blueprint reading, measurement and layout skills, and use of fabrication equipment. The Design Implementation class counts as a UC/CSU Visual and Performing Arts class (f).

Animal Science Pathway

This elective pathway focuses on basic animal terminology and husbandry, animal genetics, veterinarian skills/animal health, nutrition management programs, marketing and merchandising, and issues facing animal agriculture. Broken into five units of instruction, this course constitutes the application of concepts taught in the prerequisite courses while continuing to implement hands-on learning opportunities unique to this class.

Leadership and Communication

This elective course covers leadership topics and personal growth skills including; parliamentary procedure, public speaking, ethics, leadership types and agricultural skills. Activities include committee work, facilitating and prepping FFA events and meetings throughout the year, third grade field day, FFA week, and preparation for the livestock project pre-fair.

Outdoor Recreation

This elective course is designed to give experiences involving the study of wildlife and the decreasing quality and quantity of their environments. Students will also study basic forestry management, hunter safety, archery, fishing and backpacking. Students will be expected to complete individual projects and long-term assignments. Students will also complete the hunter's safety certification during the course. This course is one of a series of courses that prepare the student for college level entry into the various disciplines of Agriculture Science.

Ag Sales and Services

This elective course offers an off-campus, working knowledge of any of the wide variety of Ag-businesses in the area. Develop skills in the Agri-business field of your choice, as well as many skills that are common to all Ag-businesses. Become prepared for the most important industry in California. Sites may include: veterinary practices, horse training facilities, feed stores, and other agriculture jobs/industries.
