American Sign Language
For my MYP Personal Project I learned basic American Sign Language. (ASL)
American Sign Language or ASL is what the hearing-impaired use to communicate with each other. This language uses hand gestures and facial expressions only, there isn't any speaking. There is only a very small amount of people who know ASL and due to this the hearing impaired find it hard to communicate with people who don't know ASL. They usually have to carry around notepads or then write on their phone and show it people.
After seeing the struggle they go through, I decided that I should do a little bit to help their lives easier. By this I mean that, if I ever came to meet a hearing-impaired person I could help communicating easier and less time consuming for them. Early on I understood that I would not be able to learn the whole language, so I decided to narrow it down to basic level of ASL.
Product
For my product, I had originally decided to do a video only. Then after a while I thought that I should probably do some else than just a video. The idea of a website came to me and from there on my product came to life. Making both parts, the video and the website, was fun. The website was a new experience as I had never made a website before.
The picture you see above is what the front page of my website looks like. As you scroll down the website, you will see a section where there are three articles present. Two of them talks about ASL and my process through this project and the last one has a video where you can learn ASL from the video I filmed. The link below will lead you to my website.
Advice For Future Ninth Graders
Advice For Future Ninth Graders
My advice would be start early. Plan everything out. Be organized. I, myself had troubles with these things during the project, so I advice you to start and plan what you're gonna do and when. Another thing is: choose a topic you generally enjoy and would enjoy learning more about. Otherwise this project will feel like a burden. Deciding to change my project when I did really helped me to enjoy this project. Communicate with your Project Advisors. This is important. You have to take initiative and ask or plan for project meetings as this will help you with your project. Having an outside perspective on, for example your product, can be beneficial for you. If you keep all this in mind, you will enjoy the Personal Project, trust me. Good Luck!!
