Welcome to your STEM learning hub. Here you can find a weekly activity to have a go at. There is no pressure, we know this is a tricky time. We just hope that you can find something interesting here that you can share together as a family. If you need anything, you can contact me on lindsay.gardiner@education.vic.gov.au Take care., Mrs Gardiner.
This week you can go back over anything you have seen on the STEM page and choose something you would like to do! Remember there are lots of experiments and challenges on the STEM home page, click here.
You might even like to come up with your very own experiment - share it with us on our celebration wall.
Can you find ALL of the places that you can find water in your home? How many are there?
Can you find ALL of the places that water travels away from your home? (Hint - they look a lot like drains!!)
Can you draw a picture of your home or school showing ALL the places you found water?
Do you know how water gets to your house? Watch this clip to find out.
Investigate the types of water on Earth, watch this clip and find out why we can't always drink it.
Do you know about Earth's water cycle? Find out more by watching this clip.
This song is a great way to remember what happens to the water on Earth. Can you sing this song and share it on our celebration wall?
Can you draw a picture of the water cycle, or make a model with LEGO and share it on our celebration wall?
We are learning to understand how and why rainbows can occur. Watch this clip and try the experiment using a glass of water, a piece of white paper and a beam of sunlight. See if you can tell what colours you find in the rainbow. Can you draw this?
Auslan is the Australian Sign languag that we can use to communicate with each other. It uses hand and body signs that represent words. This is the song "I can sing a rainbow" - can you have a go at some of the signs and sing along with the video?
Do you think a rainbow is a rare and precious sight?
What is your favourite coloured fruit and vegetable?
You might like to draw a rainbow and put in all of the different coloured fruit and vegetables you eat.
Include sea grass for food, shallow water so they can breathe and safe things that humans can do to protect this wonderful species.
Remember back to our learning about weather and the clouds - watch this video and play the cloud memory game.
Watch this video and draw some pictures of the different types of clouds we have.
You can watch "rain" fall from a "cloud" by making this experiment.
You will need an adult, a jar or container, water, shaving cream and blue food dye.
If you fill the jar with water, put some shaving cream on top. This acts as the cloud.
Drop some food dye on top of the shaving cream and wait for it to "rain" into the water below.
What things around your house - particularly your pantry, fridge and garden, can you use to make your own PAINT!
Watch the video, explore this and paint a picture for our celebration wall!
Watch the clip, get creative and make your own LEGO spinning top - you could even build an arena for battles.
Using your iPad, can you record a timelapse of your LEGO building? Add this to our celebration wall!
Can you follow this quick and simple experiment and write some secret messages for your mum or someone special in your home? Can you show us on the celebration wall?
Can you use these ingredients to make a nice, sensory dough to play with? Can you describe it? Show us on the celebration wall.
Use your senses to explore how the cloud dough feels, moves and smells. Share you sensory explorations on our celebration wall
Using any colourd marker, some paper towel and water, can you watch how it changes?
Observe the colour chromatography experiment and share your observations on our celebration wall
If you can't do this yourself, you can watch the experiment here and share with someone what you saw!
Go to www.natgeokids.com/au/category/discover/animals/ and find some fun facts about animals that you love. Share these with your family.
You might like to draw a picture of your favourite animal and label the parts that you know!
See lesson plan.
Can you name the 5 senses we use to help us explore our world?
Can you tell your family the name of the sense that we DON'T use in our STEM classroom?
I have a feeling you would be using your 5 senses a lot at home right now.
Can you see the roots shooting out down the bottom?
Is there anything else you can observe using your sense of sight?
