Working together with Bu Mundy and Ms Uhlendorf, students and their teachers engage in engaging, informative, productive and hands-on sessions learning about how to garden and grow vegetables, as well as basic cooking skills.
Students participate in a variety of cooking activities, such as chopping, grating, spreading, baking and of course, helping to clean up afterwards! In the garden, students help weed, mulch, plant and harvest fruits and vegetables such as potatoes, silverbeet, lettuce, lemons, apricots and cherries.
Students have reflected on what an engaging and fun time this is, and these lessons have been supportive in introducing students to long term life skills.
Resource Smart is a program run by Sustainability Victoria which helps schools to promote, understand and embed sustainability practices across the school. The program helps to identify issues, and create data-based improvements to help save both resources and money for the school.
Our staff and students work through five modules, creating a baseline of data before examining the school's use of water and water, promote biodiversity and reduce waste.
The idea behind Nude Foods is to reduce the amount of rubbish and plastic being brought to school in lunches. It helps to demonstrate the ideas of "Reduce, Re-use and Recycle" as well as reducing students' environmental footprint. We encourage snacks and meals to be healthy, such as a wide range of fruits and vegetables which can be bought without plastic packaging. If buying snacks in plastic, try to opt for larger bulk bags and redistribute it into smaller snack-sized portions.
At MPRPS we also aim to reduce our rubbish by implementing recycling and composting systems. All classes or class pairs have access to a compost, which is then collected by our Grade 6 Sustainability Leaders and used to support our Kitchen Garden program. Paper recycling is also collected throughout the school.
