Respectful Relationships is a program that aims to help students cope with a range of challenges they may face and covers topics including being respectful, resilient and engaged at school.
Respectful Relationships promotes gender equality in relationships and helps students learn how to build positive connections with those around them. It focuses on building a safe environment for all to challenge stereotypical gender norms and promotes the development of problem-solving strategies used to build empathy, resilience and confidence when faced with challenges.
This initiative is about tackling family violence, which can have a devastating effect on people and whole communities. Respectful Relationships is a core component of the Victorian Curriculum and more than 1,000 Victorian school are driving change within their school community through the implementation of the program, as recommended by the Royal Commission into Family Violence. In order to prevent family violence, it is important to change the attitudes and social conditions that encourage it. Evidence shows that schools can play a key role in helping students develop an understanding of healthy relationships and respect to transform the attitudes and behaviours of future generations.
