Yrs 7-10

Careers Program 7-10

Yr 7-8

Students in Yr 7 and Yr 8 complete a career action plan, as part of My Career Portfolio, an e-Portfolio platform that students will build on throughout their time at Horsham College. Students reflect on their preferences, skills and interests and how they might apply to the world of work and careers.

There may be career exploration activities offered at times during the year in the Horsham region.

Yr 9

Students complete a career action plan as part of My Career Portfolio. They attend the Western Victorian Careers Expo and can opt-in to a number of other careers activities, trips and tours. Students can request to meet with a careers adviser. They also participate in a three step process in the first half of the year that supports them with subject selection for the senior years:

Step 1: Discover - Students begin with Morrisby, the online discovery tool designed to help them learn more about themselves – their values, preferences and skills – giving them a better understanding of where their strengths lie. These personal insights help open up a variety of possible career pathways, specifically tailored to who they are.

Step 2: Develop - It’s now time for students to share what they have discovered. My Career Insights gives students an opportunity to talk one-on-one with an independent career counsellor about any initial ideas and thoughts. This discussion will help them to set realistic goals, and start putting actions in place to continue their career journey.

Step 3: Drive - My Career Insights aims to give students the confidence to start making more informed choices and decisions around their future schooling, and widen their perspective on potential career options.

Yr 10

Students complete a career action plan as part of My Career Portfolio. They undertake a semester of careers classes and develop skills in career research. They complete OHS training and write resumes and cover letters. All students are expected to undertake work experience. Some students choose to apply for a work experience placement in Melbourne in Term 3.

Yr 10 students attend the Western Victorian Careers Expo and have the option to participate in a range of other events including tours and hands-on activities. Students are encouraged to attend sessions lunchtime sessions offered by guest speakers. Students can see a careers adviser by request. They are provided with information about pathways to further study or vocational work through VCE and VCAL prior to the subject selection period.
