Hello everyone and welcome to the March edition of our school newsletter.
We've had an exciting start to the year with our student leadership induction assembly, the school swimming carnival, the Tamworth PSSA zone swimming carnival, and Moorambilla Voices. Our kindergarten students have adjusted well to their new daily routine and are thriving with the support of their Year 6 buddies. I want to take this moment to extend a warm welcome to all our new families at Tamworth West Public School. We have several new enrolments in years 1-6, and we are glad to have you with us, hoping you are enjoying being part of the Tamworth West Public School community.
Mrs. Terrie Kay, our substantive principal, will continue to relieve in the Director of Educational Leadership role this term. I am truly honoured to continue relieving as principal, and I am grateful that Mrs. Jo Sheedy will continue in her role as deputy principal.
A friendly reminder that our school gates open at 8:25am. Parent should be aware that there is no supervision of students prior to 8:55am.
Staffing 2025
A warm welcome to our new staff:
Miss Dykota Hammond is relieving in the Aboriginal Education Officer Role
Miss Jade Allingham is teaching the senior IO/AU class
Mrs Jessie Pollock is our Hub & Spoke casual
Below is an outline of staff across the school.
P&C
A huge thank you to our amazing P&C, who are already busy planning events and fundraising activities for our students and the school. We would love to see some new members join us! I encourage you to get involved by attending meetings and supporting events throughout the year.
Parent/Carer Information Evenings
Thank you to all the families and staff who joined us for our recent parent/carer information evenings. These sessions were a great chance for you to learn about school and class routines, upcoming events and excursions, and communication methods. You also had the opportunity to see your child’s classroom and get to know their teacher better.
Effective communication is vital as we work together to support your children's development, and these evenings were an important way to strengthen the partnership between home and school. If you weren't able to attend your scheduled information evening, please don't hesitate to reach out to your classroom teacher through the front office.
School Photos
This year, students will wear their summer uniforms for school photos. The photo days are scheduled for April 1 and 2. More details about the schedule and how to order photos will be provided as the dates approach. Please make sure your child is dressed in the complete summer uniform, which includes black shoes. If you have any questions or need assistance, feel free to ask our friendly office staff.
Social Media and Online Interactions
Did you know? The Online Safety Amendment (Social Media Minimum Age) Bill 2024 passed in both Houses on 29 November 2024, legislating a minimum age of 16 for having a social media account.
We have noticed that we are spending more time dealing with negative incidents related to social media that occur outside of school. This time spent addressing these issues is taking away from valuable teaching and learning opportunities for both teachers and students. Since our students are under the age of 12, we recommend that they should not have access to platforms such as Snapchat, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger.
We encourage parents and carers to regularly monitor their child's online activity and discuss the importance of being respectful and responsible in all situations. We will continue to include cybersafety education in our curriculum and make the wellbeing of our students a top priority. If parents and carers report negative interactions involving social media between their child and other students at our school, my first recommendation will be to remove them from platforms they should not be using. It's important to note that the things communicated on social media between students are often things they would not say in person. This makes it challenging for our staff to manage these issues when they occur outside of school hours. We appreciate your cooperation and support regarding this matter, and we trust that you understand our priority is to focus on teaching and learning.
Our School Newsletter
Our school newsletter is electronic and is published monthly. It is our plan to upload it to the website and our school Facebook page on the first school day of each month (excluding when the 1st of the month falls during school holidays or the weekend). If the newsletter is delayed, we will notify families through Facebook and School Bytes.

Attendance
Working together for student attendance and to maximise learning.
We want to do all we can to be sure your child achieves their potential and enjoys being in school.
We know that school is the best place to learn. By attending school every day your child will get the most out of their learning and improve their career and life options.
When your child is absent it is important you let the school know, including the reason why, on the day or the day before. This helps make sure we know where our students are and offer support for you and your family if needed.
If you are having trouble getting your child to school every day or on time, please talk to our school staff so we can work together, because every day counts.
Missing a day here or there may not seem like much, but absences add up and can negatively impact your child’s learning and wellbeing. When your child misses one day per fortnight, that’s 4 weeks of missed learning in one year. Over an entire school journey this adds up to 1 year of lost learning.
Stewart House Fundraiser
Students will have received a donation envelope last week.
"Stewart House is the NSW Department of Education’s Charity of Choice. For nearly a century, since 1931, Stewart House has been a beacon of hope and healing for public school children in need across NSW and the ACT. Each year, 1,600 children facing difficult times stay at this beachside haven for a 12-day program focused on health, wellbeing, and fun—all at no cost to their families. Funded entirely by donations and school fundraising, the program provides everything from dental and vision checks to confidence-building activities, ensuring children receive the care and support they need to reset and thrive. Stewart House’s vision is to inspire children to see beyond their present circumstances and embrace real hope and aspirations for a brighter future.
Show your support for children in need and enter for a chance to win a $4,000 travel voucher! The draw will take place in Term 2 on Friday, 23 May 2025. Online payments are encouraged, and families can scan the QR code on the envelope to pay, record the receipt number, and return the envelope to the school office to enter the draw!"
The Smith Family
We understand that many families are still facing cost of living challenges and rising education expenses. That is why we’re excited to share that Saver Plus can help ease the financial burden of school costs.
With Saver Plus, families can receive $500 in matched funds to assist with expenses like devices, laptops, school uniforms, school camps and school supplies. Here is how it works:
Save up to $50 a month for 10 months, and your savings will be matched up to $500.
Home Reading Diaries
By the end of this week your child should have received his/her Home Reading Diary. Please write your child’s name and class on the front of the diary. It is also a good idea tocover the diary in clear plastic or contact. We would like you to encourage and provide time for your child to read each night, either to you or silently. If your child is not reading as yet, you may read to them. Sign and date the diary (PLEASE ONLY ONE ENTRY PER DAY) and send it back to school with your child once the page is full. Students give their diaries to their classroom teacher. As students complete 5, 10, 15 pages they receive a major certificate at our assemblies. Students who complete 20 pages, 300 nights of reading, will receive special recognition for their efforts. Thank you for your assistance and cooperation.
The Resilience Project
At TWPS we will be continuing the implementation of The Resilience Project (TRP). TRP delivers emotionally engaging programs to schools, providing practical, evidence-based mental health strategies to build resilience and happiness. Through weekly lessons and student wellbeing journals, we share the benefits of GRATITUDE, EMPATHY and MINDFULNESS, and easy ways to practise these in everyday life. We also incorporate Emotional Literacy, Connection and Physical Health education and activities as they are foundational contributors to positive mental health.
-Jo Sheedy
Deputy Principal
At TWPS we are well and truly on our way to embedding restorative practices into many parts of our daily lives. Priming is an important part of the work we do, planting the seed for the behaviour we want to see. This gives our young people a clear idea of the types of behaviours that support them and the people around them to experience a positive affect on their emotions. Have a watch of this 5 minute clip as Daniel reminds us about Priming.
WOW your kids with colour! View more recipe ideas here: www.swapit.net.au/recipes. This month’s feature recipe is ‘Fruit Scones’.
P&C AGM
Our P&C Annual General Meeting (AGM) is scheduled for Monday, March 10th, at 5:30 PM in the Staffroom, followed by our General Monthly Meeting. We have five positions available on our executive committee: President, Two Vice Presidents, Treasurer, and Secretary. For the past two years, we have only managed to fill four of these positions, and we urgently need new members to help run our P&C effectively.
P&C Membership
To become a financial member, which requires a $2 membership fee, you need to attend at least one meeting each year. Membership grants you a vote on how our P&C can support the school and advocate for the entire school community.
Last year, we raised $12,000 for the bus shelter, which we had been fundraising for over two years. We are now looking for a new project to focus on.
Currently, our P&C has 12 members, three of whom are school employees. Without more volunteers, we cannot continue our annual fundraisers, such as the Mother's Day Stall, Father's Day Stall, Bunnings BBQ, and Christmas Carols.
These events typically require only a 2-3 hour commitment, and our monthly meetings usually last about an hour. We’re not asking for a significant time commitment from everyone, but with around 360 students in our school, having more than 12 members in the P&C would be fantastic. In recent years, we’ve had to decline several Bunnings BBQ opportunities because we couldn't gather the 16 volunteers needed to run the event.
We hope to provide a Zoom link for the AGM to facilitate attendance. This link will be shared on the Parents and Carers Facebook Page as the date approaches.
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to one of our Executive team members (Rachel Mountain, Renae Mumford, Catherine Te Au, and Emily Crompton).
We look forward to seeing you at our next meeting!
-Catherine Te Au
Harmony Day
The canteen will be running a preorder special for Harmony Day. It will be available to order on Flexischools from March 3 until the March 17 and will go to the child on Harmony Day, March 21. Options are as follows:
Hot dog with sauce and cheese $5
Canteen made Fried Rice and 2 mini spring rolls $6
Greek Salad with Meatballs and Tzatziki $6
Lamington Finger and Anzac Biscuit $3
Volunteers
If there are any parents or grandparents who have any time to spare to help with the sausage sizzle at cross country on Friday 21 April, it would be greatly appreciated. We need volunteers in order to be able to keep running the sausage sizzles at our events, even half an hour of your time is appreciated. If anyone is able to help please contact me via the office.
Yaama Maliyaa
Welcome back to another great year at Tamworth West.
This year we welcome Dykota Hammond who is relieving as our Aboriginal Education Officer. If you see her in the playground, please feel free to grab her for a yarn.
Mrs Courtney Lyon will be the Chairperson of the Aboriginal Education Team again this year. If you have any ideas of events or services for our children, please feel free to contact her through the front office.
Mrs Jo Spicer will be continuing to teach Aboriginal Language during your child’s teachers RFF sessions. If your child does not see her this semester they will in semester two.
We have already started planning events for the students including Yr 6 Girls Art group with Miss Courtney Stanton, Dance groups for all years and NAIDOC Week activities.
We kicked off this year’s events with Elders Day. We had a lovely group from SORA bring craft activities and games for the students. They also bought with them some of the Clontarf boys and some girls from STAR that attend Tamworth High School. By all counts the students who attended had a great time and cannot wait for more events like this.
Later this month well will be having a Personalised Learning Pathways get together for students, teachers and parents. More information will be sent out shortly through School Bytes so please keep an eye out.
Tamworth West Public School is a Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL) school. PBL is a whole school program that encourages positive behaviour and allows students to become responsible for their own actions. Students and teachers work together to create a positive learning environment within our school using consistent procedures, language and expectations.
We have three expectations that underpin teaching and learning at Tamworth West Public School.
These are:
RESPECT
RESILIENCE
RESPONSIBILITY
We encourage students to uphold these expectations to a high standard. Our PBL motto is:
EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE, EVERY TIME
Positive Rewards
We have a school wide behaviour system that recognises and encourages positive behaviour. Students receive raffle tickets for displaying the correct behaviour.
Weekly Lessons
Students participate in weekly school wide lessons that focus on a specific behaviour which is determined by data. There is a fortnightly focus area taught after each PBL assembly, for example, sportsmanship in games.
RESPECT
We keep our areas tidy
We use our manners
We speak nicely to others
We keep our hands and feet to ourselves
RESILIENCE
We accept our consequences
We use also inclusive
We seek help when needed
We solve problems peacefully
RESPONSIBILITY
We look after our things
We wear our school uniform
We are honest
We stay in the right areas
Premier's Reading Challenge
The NSW Premier's Reading Challenge is now open and Tamworth West Public School is excited to be participating!
What is the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge?
The PRC is a statewide Challenge that encourages students to develop a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students and enables them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition, but a challenge to encourage each student to read, to read more, and to read more widely.
All students who complete the challenge and have their reading record validated by the school’s PRC coordinator will receive a certificate signed by the Premier of NSW.
How many books do students need to read?
Students in Kindergarten to Year 2 are challenged to read or experience 30 books. 20 of these books must be from the relevant Challenge booklists, and up to 10 books can be personal choice books. Books can be read with a parent, carer, teacher or another student.
Students in Year 3 to Year 10 are challenged to read 20 books independently. At least 10 of these books must be from the relevant Challenge booklists, and up to 10 books can be personal choice books.
If a book is from an approved PRC series, students can enter up to 5 books as Challenge books, and can read up to 10 other books from the same series as Personal Choice books. More information on the rules of the Challenge can be found on the PRC website.
Books must be added to a student’s online reading record by Friday 22 August 2025 in order for their reading record to be validated and receive a certificate.
How do students log their reading?
Students can access the PRC’s Student Experience site using their DoE username and password, or can log into the site via the Student Portal. A video guide explaining how to use the Student Experience site can be found here.
How can students find books on the NSW PRC challenge lists?
There are many PRC books in our school library. Just ask Mrs Ward and she can point you in the right direction. Students will be encouraged to borrow books that are from the lists in their weekly library lessons. There is also a display shelf dedicated to PRC for the students to choose from.
Exciting Beginnings!
Dear Parents,
It’s been an incredible start to the year! We’ve been busy settling into school life, creating wonderful memories, and laying the foundation for a positive and fun-filled school year. Here’s a glimpse of what we’ve been up to:
Dancing and Fun
The students have been enjoying some energetic dance routines, including the Chicken Dance and YMCA. These activities have been a fantastic way to get everyone moving and having fun together!
Establishing Routines
The children have been getting to know their teachers, learning about the support they can expect in the classroom. We believe these relationships are vital to the success of each student’s school journey. We’ve also been talking about how school works – from the timetable to different activities – so everyone is well-prepared for what’s ahead. It’s wonderful to see the children begin to feel comfortable and excited about their school experience. We’ve been focusing on establishing our classroom routines, helping the students feel comfortable and confident in their new environment. This is key to ensuring that school life runs smoothly for everyone!
Building Friendships
Our students have been making new friends and forming positive relationships with one another. It’s been heartwarming to see them interact, share, and learn how to work together in a friendly and respectful environment. They have been enjoying recess and lunch with their buddies, fostering a sense of community and friendship. It’s been a lovely time for everyone to relax, recharge, and enjoy their friends’ company. And of course, there’s been plenty of time for outdoor play! The children are having a blast on the playground, exploring and engaging in fun, imaginative games with their peers.
Story Time
Storytime has been a highlight, sparking creativity and imagination as the students listen to engaging stories. This helps them build their language skills and develop a love of reading.
Artistic Masterpieces
Our little artists have been busy creating some beautiful artwork! The classroom is full of color and imagination, showcasing the wonderful creativity of each child.
Beginning Sound Learning
We’ve started our journey into phonics, helping the students begin to learn and recognise sounds. It’s an exciting time as they develop early literacy skills!
We’re so proud of how quickly the children have settled into school life, and we can’t wait to see all the exciting things we’ll continue to accomplish together in the coming weeks!

Kindergarten Teachers
YEAR 1
Classroom Routines
We have been working tirelessly over the last few weeks, to establish classroom routines. Students have been consistently remembering to bring their hats and water. It is also fabulous to see so many students eating fruit every day during Crunch and Sip.
The students have been encouraged to be responsible with their belongings and in 1M we have also been practicing our cutting skills. Students are required to cut out their work and ensure it is glued correctly in the book. Their skills have improved significantly over the last weeks.
Reading & Writing
Classes are working through daily spelling, phonics and reading. The concept of context was the focus of the text in Year 1 and this week and next we explore narratives. Students are building their understanding of nouns and noun groups, verbs and prepositional phrases in narratives.
Maths
We have been exploring collections of numbers in numeracy and finding smaller numbers in larger numbers. Year 1 also identified polygons and built their vocabulary knowledge in mathematics. Identifying the attributes of different polygons helped students group shapes.
YEAR 2
Welcome to Year 2!
Year Two have settled well into their new classes and new routines. 2H have welcomed two new students and 2L have welcomed one new student to our classes. Our classrooms are busy with focused learning.
Writing
Our writing unit for the past two weeks covered the concept of context. Students constructed artworks, then wrote descriptions of them. They also described a special memory of a person or a place, using a mixture of simple and compound sentences.
Maths
We focused on collections in mathematics, learning to accurately estimate, then efficiently count larger collections of items. We played some fun learning games, such as Climb the Stairs and Race to 100, which are based around place value. We explored the attributes of number groups and learnt how to use a Venn Diagram to record our findings.
Sport
Year Two have really enjoyed learning tennis skills during sport. They are becoming more coordinated, and some students are able to hold small rallies with their partners. In Geography we have learnt about Earth's location in the universe, the different hemispheres and the names of the continents and oceans. In Science we have investigated the features of different animals and learnt how to accurately label a drawing.

What an amazing day, with so many students having a go! Well done TWPS!
Writing - Year 5
Year 5 have been working through the novel The Wild Robot, where students have been exploring science fiction narratives. Year 5 has been consolidating and developing different parts of a narrative such as the orientation, rising action, complication, climax, falling action and resolution. Students have been creating their version of each section based on the classroom text and science fiction short film. Students have primarily targeted their writing on using a correct narrative structure.
Writing - Year 6
Year 6 have been exploring the classic Australian novel Storm Boy, where they have been analysing the features of an imagination text. Year 6 students have produced some excellent, creative pieces of narrative writing so far, with a focus on including correct punctuation (quotation marks, sentence structure, and modal words) and figurative language (similes, personification, and idioms).
Maths
Stage 3 has been enjoying new ways of learning in mathematics, where hands-on activities and shared reasoning have allowed for deeper mathematical thinking within the classroom. Our typical mathematics lesson involves a daily number sense activity, and core learning opportunities, with consolidation at the end.
In other KLAs, Stage 3 have been investigating the living world in Science, managing self in PD/Health, factors that shape the world in Geography, and different art media (drawing, painting, printing etc.) in Creative Arts.
School Leaders
In other leadership news, our House Captains are well underway with the operation of the sports shed and house point collection on Fridays. The School Captains have begun leading our Meet and Greet on Mondays and our SRC have started planning initiatives with Mrs Hickey. 2-6A
Welcome to class 2-6A! My name is Jade Allingham, and along with Geoffery Ward, we are thrilled to embark on this new and exciting year with your children.
This year, we have a wonderful group of seven boys from Year 2 to Year 6. To provide the best learning experience, we will be collaborating with the other inclusive education class for subjects like Geography, Science, Health, and Personal Development & Health. On our designated sports day, we will also integrate with our peers for physical activities.
Class Phone
Currently our class phone is not available. If you would like to contact me, please ring the office and I will get back to you as soon as possible. Thank you for your understanding.
In The Classroom
In 2-6A, our main focus this term is on enhancing our comprehension skills to help students improve their ability to understand, create, and respond to written texts effectively.
In Creative Arts, we are exploring dragons and are excited about the opportunity to make a sculpture by designing and creating a dragon out of clay. Each student will create a small dragon model, which we will paint and send home for display.
I am genuinely looking forward to creating engaging and enriching learning experiences for all the children this year!
Jade Allingham
2-6A
3-6C
Hi and welcome to 3/6C. My name is Nikki Cunneen and along with Bruce Clare, I would like to welcome everyone to a new and exciting year.
This year we have 19 students, 5 girls and 14 boys. We have students in year 3 to 6, therefore, we are splitting with the other inclusive education class for the following subjects: Geography, Science, Health and The Resilience Project. We join our peers for sport on our allocated day.
Phonics
Our focus in 3/6C is on phonics and learning our phonemes in combination with our reading. We interact with our PowerPoint every day which focuses on specific sounds, and how we can manipulate these sounds to decode words in texts. It is an exciting learning time in our room.
Art
In art we are looking at sculptures and how to design and create a dragon from clay. We envisage making a small model of a dragon and we will paint it to take home for display.
I am really looking forward to creating exciting and amazing learning experiences for all the children.
Nikki Cunneen

Seven students from our school, Mella Carrigan, Charlotte Vesey, Myles Carrigan, Harry Unger, Zac Luchetti, Christopher Williams and Lincoln Moffat were selected in the Tamworth Titans or Barraba Representative teams for the 2024/2025 touch season.
All players experienced a whirlwind of emotions and mixed results across all four carnivals. They celebrated victories, faced tough losses, and gained invaluable lessons in perseverance, maintaining a positive mindset, and building resilience while competing against regional and metropolitan teams. Beyond the scoreboard, their ability to support each other and find joy throughout the journey was wonderful to see. They demonstrated fantastic sportsmanship and dedication throughout the season.
Tamworth Titans Under 10s girls team smashed it out of the park at the Coffs carnival earlier this month, losing only one of their five rounds games to Taree. Thet then faced off against Taree again in the grand final and secured a 1-0 victory, taking out the girls under 10s division for that carnival! At Junior State Cup in Dubbo last weekend, the girls had a tough couple of days, finishing fifth in their pool and heading into quarter finals to play the number one team from another pool. They dug deep, fought hard and put it all on the line, unfortunately going down 2-1 and knocking them out. What a fantastic game to round out the representative season! Congratulations girls!
Tamworth Titans and Barraba Under 12s boys gave it a red-hot crack during every game and came away with a couple of close matches and a handful of wins across the carnivals. They stayed strong and preserved through all their games. Congratulations boys!

Welcome to 2025!
Term 1 is well and truly underway. It has been wonderful to see the students return, reconnect with their friends and settle into the daily routines of school life.
Our teachers have been spending time getting to know their new students, establishing classroom expectations and routines, building relationships and conducting assessments. With a more consistent approach to gathering assessment data across the school, our teachers are better equipped at stage, grade and classroom level, to identify student needs and plan teaching and learning accordingly.
The NSW Curriculum Reform aims to strengthen and streamline what is taught in schools. Curriculum reform is an opportunity to engage and reenergise what we teach and how we teach it. This is an exciting time!
With teachers in the full swing of implementing the new English and Mathematics Syllabuses, over the next two years we will turn our attention to becoming familiar with the new syllabuses of other Key Learning Areas, such as:
Although the teaching of each new syllabus in its entirety is not mandatory until 2027, our staff will be slowly exploring the syllabus packages as they are developed for each Key Learning Area. In the meantime, we will continue to teach current syllabuses.
We look forward to learning more about how to implement the next part of Curriculum Reform and in doing so, preparing ourselves to provide the best possible curriculum to our wonderful students here at Tamworth West Public School.
Moorambilla Voices
Recently, we had the great pleasure of hosting Moorambilla Voices for a music workshop as part of their 2025 Skills Development Tour. This nationally-awarded program provides regional students with an extraordinary opportunity to sing, dance and create incredible performances and tours across Australia.
Between February and March, Moorambilla will deliver workshops across regional NSW to over 3,500 children from Years 3-12, from Armatree to Yoogali and Cobar to Wee Waa and everywhere in between. During the recent workshop, our students engaged with Artistic Director Michelle Leonard OAM, learning about music through fun, joyful, collaborative and creative activities. Some students will soon receive invitations to attend Moorambilla’s August and September Residency Camps in Baradine where they will create works which connect to their community and the landscape with world-class musicians, performers, composers, choreographers and visual artists. The Residency Camps will culminate in spectacular gala performances (location TBC) on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 September, to which family, friends and communities are invited to attend. If your child receives an invitation to attend a Residency Camp, they will receive their letter of offer in April.
