The staff here at TWPS are using Stored Responses, we thought you might like to join us. Using a Stored Response connects us back to being able to be prepared for when we face a behaviour we'd rather not see and use and keeps our limbic system in check.
Stored Responses support us in being firm but fair and tilt the odds in someone's favour to understand how we are feeling and how they can adjust to make us feel better about a behaviour.
Have a listen to what Daniel has to share.
Cookie Dough Fundraiser
Thank you to everyone for their support with our cookie dough fundraiser. We truly appreciate the support from families to help raise funds for the P&C.
Pick up will be Friday the 25th of July. Details on pick up times will be posted on the Parents & Carers Facebook page closer to the pick-up date (ideally 2.45pm-3.45pm depending on the delivery truck eta).
Cookie Father's Day Stall
The Father's Day stall will be held on the 5th of September this year. Please keep an eye on our Facebook page for more information closer to the date!
P&C Meeting
The next P&C meeting will be held on Monday 11th of August at 5:30pm. We apologise for any issues with the zoom link from the past meeting, we are working towards fixing this before the next meeting.

Dear Parents and Carers,
My name is Dykota Hammond, and I am currently serving as the relieving Aboriginal Education Officer at Tamworth West Public School. I have strong cultural ties, with my father being a Wiradjuri man from Gulargambone and Gilgandra, and my mother being a Gomeroi woman who was born and raised here in Tamworth.
I am passionate about culture and education, and I have previously worked at Poppins and Peel High. My goal is to enhance the cultural activities within our school community. To achieve this, I would like to invite Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander parents and carers, as well as the wider school community, to participate in fortnightly afternoon catch-ups. These gatherings will provide an opportunity for us to discuss and share your views on what Aboriginal education at Tamworth West Public School should encompass.
I look forward to meeting you all and encourage you to stop me to say hello whenever you see me around the school.”
Celebrating NAIDOC Week 2025 at Tamworth West Public School
This year marks the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week, and our school proudly joined the celebrations honouring the rich cultures, histories, and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The 2025 theme, ‘The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy’, recognises the achievements of the past while looking forward to a bright future.
Students across all year levels engaged in a variety of meaningful activities designed to deepen their understanding and respect for First Nations cultures. During NAIDOC Week, students had the opportunity to participate in several art activities, including designing their own boomerangs, painting their life stories on canvas, creating Australian animals or trinket bowls from clay, weaving raffia headbands and bracelets, and printing their own designs on linen bags. Many students also explored themes of connection to Country, community, and identity through additional creative projects and discussions that contributed to our learning in the lead-up to NAIDOC Week.
NAIDOC Week provided a wonderful opportunity for our school community to come together in celebration, learning, and respect, reinforcing our commitment to reconciliation and cultural awareness.
We thank all staff, students, and community members who helped make this week a memorable and enriching experience.
'Drawing Us Together' Project
Students from Tamworth West Public School have proudly contributed their vibrant and thoughtful artwork, now on display at Tamworth Square near Kmart. This initiative is part of the 'Drawing Us Together' project, a celebration of Indigenous culture through the creation of a children's storybook written by Indigenous authors and illustrated by local school students.
In partnership with authors from across the country, each sharing unique and inspiring stories that connect to this year's NAIDOC theme: 'The Next Generation; Strength, Vision, and Legacy,' we are proud to showcase the talent and creativity of our students.
We need your help to decide on the final illustrations to be included in the book, so take a look and vote for your favourite artwork. The exhibition is open from 27 June until 20 July, so don't miss the chance to support our young artists and celebrate Indigenous culture.

Book Week is Coming in August!
We’re getting ready for one of our favourite celebrations of the year — Book Week! From September 1-5, our school library will be buzzing with fun, imagination, and a love of reading. This year’s theme is “Book an Adventure”, and we have lots of exciting activities planned, including a book fair, competitions, and of course, our much-loved Book Week Parade!
Stay tuned for more details - and start planning those costumes! It's a wonderful opportunity to celebrate books and encourage a lifelong love of reading in our students.
The Resilience Project have an upcoming Webinar ‘Building Resilience at Home’. Please see the flyer below for more information. If you are interested in participating in the session, you are invited to register for the webinar using this link. TRP team will then send you the Zoom link and a calendar invite.
Gardening club
Students have been working hard this semester to grow a range of different fruits and vegetables before winter. Last week students removed all the sweet potatoes from the garden beds. We have been pulling all the old fruit and vegetables out to get ready to plant our spring crops next term!
We have had an exciting few weeks in Kindergarten! In maths, our little learners are diving into the world of analogue clocks, focusing on telling the time on the hour. Through engaging activities involving "Friends of 10" with cards, dice, counters, and ten frames, the students are developing their numeracy skills with enthusiasm.
English
In English, the children are making great strides in building their sound and high-frequency word knowledge. We are blending sounds to read and write simple words in sentences. Our recent reading texts about pets have allowed us to identify action verbs and descriptive words. The highlight of our English sessions was creating 'Floof' the cat and acting out freeze-frame events from the story, which brought our learning to life!had an exciting few weeks in Kindergarten! In maths, our little learners are diving into the world of analogue clocks, focusing on telling the time on the hour. Through engaging activities involving "Friends of 10" with cards, dice, counters, and ten frames, the students are developing their numeracy skills with enthusiasm.
Sport
During our K/2 sport rotations, students are focusing on specific skill development in their house groups, promoting teamwork and physical fitness. We are ready for our big race at the athletics carnival
Wellbeing Week
We also celebrated Wellbeing Week with joy! Many students dressed in their cosy pyjamas, and we enjoyed sharing reading time with our Year 6 buddy classes. A special highlight was the kindergarten teddy bears picnic, where we had delicious snacks and treats together.
Lastly, we want to extend our congratulations to our Kindergarten students for successfully taking charge of the K-2 assemblies over the past few weeks. We are incredibly proud of their efforts in running the assembly, speaking confidently on the microphone, and being fantastic hand shakers!
Thank you for your continued support! Safe holidays, and we will see you all next term.

Life Education Van
It was fabulous to have The Life Education van visit this term. As always, Harold was welcomed warmly into the school. Many students took advantage of the experience. Years 1 and 2 learned about relationships and choices. The interactive lessons and activities designed are engaging. However, the students always love meeting Harold. Thank you to Mrs Ward for organising this visit.
Wellbeing Week
Wellbeing Week was again full of fabulous experiences this term. Students had a combined lunch on the playground, the picnic like-lunch was well received by all that participated. Tuesday staff opened their classrooms during the break and offered a variety of activities; dance, construction, art and crafts to name a few. Wednesday Years 1 and 2 combined and visited alternate Stage 1 teachers and completed activities in different rooms. Thursday... all about PJs and discussion about sleep and the importance. Finally – the entire school had assigned buddy classes and students read aloud to each other. 4B joined 1M and 4W read with 1D. Year 2 combined with kindergarten and read with year 6 students. Have a look at the delightful photos.
YEAR 1
Writing
In our recent writing sessions, we have been diving deep into the world of characters! We've explored how characters can evoke emotions and the importance of character traits in storytelling. The students had a fantastic time creating their own unique characters and imagining the exciting actions they could take, using verbs and descriptive adverbs to bring their stories to life.
Currently, we are focusing on how feelings and ideas are conveyed in stories through the use of pictures and colour, as well as symbols and representations. It’s exciting to enhance our storytelling skills and creativity!
Maths
In our recent mathematics lessons, we've been focusing on understanding the concept of equivalence. Students are learning to recognise when two collections have the same total value, using terms like 'equal', 'equivalent', and 'is the same as' to describe these relationships. We are also exploring various strategies for combining and separating quantities, such as counting on and counting back from the largest number, to efficiently find totals.
We have been having an absolute blast in our recent lessons, especially with engaging games like Battleships and creating our own maps! These activities have been a fun way to help students give, describe, and compare the position of objects using positional language. In addition to this, students are also learning to give and follow directions to various locations, enhancing their navigational skills. It's been an exciting journey of discovery and learning through play!
YEAR 2
Writing
We have been reading some interesting texts over the past few weeks and have had discussions around imagery, symbol, connotation and character. We have thought about what a character does, says and thinks and have been able to make connections to our own personal judgements about ourselves, our morals and values.
We have written texts using figurative language and have loved creating similes and metaphors about ourselves and the world around us. We have written paragraphs focusing on descriptive language, noun groups and adverbial phrases.
Maths
In mathematics we have been developing our knowledge, understanding and skills in forming groups and combining and separating. We looked at and discussed arrays in our environment and learnt about inverse operations. We used interlocking cubes to build an array city, then collected data on the most frequently created arrays. We planned a party by using multiplication and addition to decide on the number of cakes and party bags needed for our guests. We really enjoyed the lesson where we were shown a series of pictures and then provided with a series of clues to solve the mystery of how many items there were altogether.
We have also been developing our knowledge, understanding, and skills of position. We have been able to interpret simple maps by identifying objects in different locations. We loved creating different paths for the Big Bad Wolf to visit the Three Little Pigs, and used directional language such as left, right, forwards, backwards, quarter and half turns to guide our human ‘Big Bad Wolf’ to the homes of our three human ‘Little Pigs’.

Stage 1 Teachers
Welcome to the July newsletter. It is the end of Term 2 and what a busy term it has been.
We have loved seeing the Year 4 class present their assembly items and we look forward to seeing Year 3 classes next term when it is their turn.
Sporting Reps
We continue to have had a number of students represent our school at different sporting gala days.
In week 8, Harriet and Bonnie from 4B joined students from Stage 3 in our school girls softball team! Although the girls went down in the game, Harriet and Bonnie played magnificently with their batting, fielding and running. I am so proud of their efforts.
On the first day back at school next term, Cooper, Ben and Theo will be joining the Stage 3 boys to also play in their softball gala day. We wish them all the best and can’t wait to report back to you in the next newsletter with our result.
Sport
In sport this term we have continued focusing on learning and improving our athletics carnival events. These include high jump, discus, shotput, ball games and running. In weeks 9 and 10 of this term we have been conducting trials (and will continue in week 1 in Term 3) for high jump, discus and shot put. From all accounts we have a very sporty group of students amongst us!
Athletics Carnival
Our school athletics carnival will be held on Thursday 31st July. It is a whole school event and we look forward to seeing everyone there. As adults it is important that we encourage students to attend and have a go. Participating in events earns house points and these can sometimes make the difference with the overall sporting house winner on the day!
Dubbo Excursion
A reminder that the final payment for Dubbo was Friday the 21st of June (end of week 8) this term. Medical forms are also due ASAP to assist with planning. Please also ensure you have completed the medical form online ASAP. It is due by Monday the 3rd of June.
We will be holding an excursion information evening on Monday 29th July from 5-6pm. This will be held in the hall and will be for Stage 2 AND Stage 3 excursions (combined). More information will come out next term.
Warm Clothing
The weather has changed in the last week or so. As the weather turns cold, it is important that students have appropriate clothing with them. Long pants and stockings will keep legs warm and jumpers are important for our top half. Please check with your child that they have adequate clothes for the day to avoid them getting sick! We appreciate your help with this!
Crunch and sip
Thank you also to parents for packing fresh fruit for our morning crunch and sip. Food doesn’t have to be whole piece (even an apple cut into slices is good) and it makes eating their food while doing our morning routines nice and easy.
Pen Licences
Well done to students in Year 4 who have received their pen licences in recent weeks.
Upcoming Events
Monday 29 July
Stage 2 and 3 excursion information session
Thursday 31 July

Stage 2 Teachers
What a fantastic and busy Term 2 we have had. This term has seen our Stage 3 students participate in so many sporting events, excursions, school celebrations and lots of amazing learning opportunities in the classroom.
Sport
This term, we have had a significant amount of our Year 5 and 6 students participating in a range of sporting gala days, carnivals and trials for netball, basketball, touch football, softball, soccer and cross country. These students represented our school with pride, and it was great to see the teamwork, determination and resilience of our students while representing Tamworth West with pride.
Our Stage 3 students have also been participating in athletics rotations each week for sport in preparation for our upcoming sports carnival next term. We look forward to watching the students represent their sporting houses with pride at the upcoming carnival.
Engineering Without Borders STEM Workshops
Our students were lucky enough to participate in a STEM workshop run by the University of Technology Sydney in Week 6. The workshop taught students about renewable energy and the students all worked in teams to create a prototype wind turbine. It was great to see the students working with their peers to complete this challenge and thinking critically and creatively to complete this task.
Parent-Teacher Interviews and Reports
We would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all the parents who attended the recent parent-teacher interviews over the past two weeks. Your involvement and support play a vital role in your child's education and development. It was a wonderful opportunity to discuss student progress, celebrate achievements, and collaborate on ways to enhance learning experiences. We appreciate the time you took to engage with our teachers and share your insights. Thank you once again for your partnership and commitment to your child's success!
Student reports were sent home electronically this week via School Bytes, providing valuable insights into each child's progress and achievements throughout Semester 1.
English
In our Year 5 English unit ‘Spotlight’, students delved into the captivating world of storytelling and poetry. This dynamic unit encouraged them to explore various genres, enhance their writing skills, and express their creativity. Students engaged in collaborative activities, discussions, and individual projects that highlighted the beauty of language and the power of imagery in poetry. They also learned to express their unique perspectives and voices, showcasing their original narratives and poems. We were thrilled to see how our students shone as they shared their creativity and insights throughout this enriching learning experience!
Our Year 6 students have continued their novel study on "Rabbit, Soldier, Angel, Thief,". Throughout this unit, they explored the themes and characters of the story, engaging in thoughtful discussions and analyses. Students then took their understanding a step further by creating their own picture books inspired by the narrative. This project allowed them to express their creativity through illustrations and storytelling, fostering a deeper connection to the text. The final showcase of their picture books highlighted the imaginative interpretations and hard work of our students, making it a proud moment for everyone involved. We were delighted to witness their growth and enthusiasm as they brought their unique stories to life!
Geography and Science
In geography, students have been exploring the various factors that shape our world. Through engaging lessons and hands-on activities, they examined the impact of natural elements such as landforms, climate, and ecosystems, as well as human influences including urban development, agriculture, and cultural practices. Students participated in group discussions, conducted research, and created presentations to demonstrate their understanding of how these factors interact to shape our environment. This enriching unit has fostered a greater appreciation for the complexities of our world and the importance of sustainable practices.
To support our current Science unit ‘Living World’, our students attended 3 excursions to Peel High School where they engaged in Paddock to Plate lessons. We were lucky enough to be invited to the Peel High Agricultural Unit for three incredible visits. During these visits, our students had opportunities to handle and lead sheep and cattle, learn to test the quality of wool and the process of creating wool products, and observe and pat a 2-day old lamb. To finish up our experience, we were treated to a bbq prepared by the incredible Peel High students.
A big thank you to the Peel High staff, Mr Bowman, Mrs Lamph and Miss Wrightson for providing our students with hands-on experiences in their learning.
Canberra Excursion
We are excited for our upcoming excursion in Week 5, Term 3! This trip will provide students with a unique opportunity to explore our nation's capital, deepening their understanding of Australian history, government, and culture. A friendly reminder that the first payment instalment of $250 is due this week. The final instalment is due August 4.
We will be hosting a combined Stage 2 and Stage 3 excursion information night for parents on Tuesday 29th July (Term 3, Week 2) from 5:00-6:00pm. At this information session, we will go through all the final details and will provide families with packing lists and final itineraries for the excursion. These itineraries will include the schedules for the two coaches. To facilitate large groups, it is necessary to have groups in different venues at alternate times.
As we wrap up a fantastic Semester 1, we would like to take a moment to celebrate the hard work and achievements of our students and staff. It has been a semester filled with learning, growth, and memorable experiences. We encourage everyone to take a well-deserved break over the holidays to relax, recharge, and enjoy time with family and friends. We look forward to welcoming everyone back for an exciting Semester 2. Happy holidays!

K-1N
This term has been an exciting and productive one for our class! In sport, we've had the opportunity to learn how to play boccia, which has been a fantastic experience for everyone. We've also been diligently practicing our skills in preparation for the upcoming athletics carnival next term. In English, we've focused on narratives, working hard to recall stories and put them in the correct order, enhancing our storytelling abilities. Our maths lessons have been equally engaging, as we've spent the entire term exploring patterns. We've created patterns using blocks, our bodies, and even music, making learning both interactive and fun. It's been a wonderful term filled with growth and creativity!
Alexis Neilson
AP, K-1N
2-6P
What an incredible term it has been for 2-6P! We have experienced a wonderful journey of growth and learning, filled with exciting opportunities that have sparked our curiosity and creativity.
To cap off our term, we had an amazing excursion to the astronomy club. It was a thrilling experience that allowed us to delve deeper into the wonders of space, enriching our understanding and enthusiasm for our final English unit focused on space exploration.
As we look ahead, we are filled with anticipation for the adventures and learning opportunities that await us in Term 3. We can't wait to continue our journey together!
Jessie Pollock
2-6P
3-6C
As the term draws to an end, we recognise and celebrate the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC week. As a team, we work together to encourage our children to achieve and become strong and amazing adults.
It has been a very big term with lots of learning, events and excursions. Welcome to our new student Harmony in year 3. It is lovely to have another girl in the room with a beautiful smile. Welcome to 3/6C! This brings us back to a full class with 18 students.
Astronomy Club
TThis week, along with 2/6P, we visited the Astronomy Club to complete our English unit on the Solar System. We looked at telescopes, discussed the stars, and were immersed in outer space. Afterwards, we had lunch at the beautiful botanical gardens and explored the different flora, both native and introduced. We examined how First Nations people used these plants in their daily lives. We had a wonderful adventure!
Science
Students in Year 5/6 have visited Peel High School three times this term to complement the Science unit, "Paddock to Plate." The students looked at sheep and cattle and learned many aspects of caring for them and the process of them becoming food for humans to consume. The students led the sheep and cattle in a circle as if they were presenting them at the Tamworth Show.
Solar System Unit
Students have been creating many different artworks in the Solar Systems English unit. The artworks have included drawing aliens with oil pastels, ensuring our technique was firm and the colouring was clean. We created colourful planets, and with very careful cutting, we cut out an astronaut and placed it on black cardboard. This was then splattered with white paint, which the students thoroughly enjoyed. One of the favourite tasks was creating a black hole 3D illusion. Many staff and students commented that our pictures looked like photocopies that had been coloured in. The students and I have taken great delight in correcting them and explaining that we have drawn them. Many have asked for the secret, and we have not told them yet.
Sport
Sport is always a favourite, and students usually join their peers for athletics this term. On occasions when sport is cancelled, students participate in class sport with 2/6P. This is a favourite because we have a choice of games to play. Pacman, where students walk along the lines of the basketball court to escape the Pacman, is the first choice every time. If they are tagged, they sit down.
Have a wonderful, safe and relaxing holiday. Mr Clare and I are looking forward to a magical Term 3.

Girls Softball Gala Day
On Friday 20th of June Miss Bagshaw and 11 enthusiastic girls participated in the PSSA Girls Softball Knockout Gala Day.
The sun was out and the weather was beautiful, however a heavy dew meant that the ball became very slippery VERY quickly!
In our first game against Quirindi PS we were beaten by 1 run (11-10) and were unlucky to come away with a loss. The girls were fabulous about listening to instructions and giving it their best efforts. For a lot of the girls this was their first game and they learned a lot on the field. We were lucky to have a few experienced players who were able to help their teammates out on the field with encouraging comments and tips!
Due to the loss of our first game, it meant that our next game was a friendly against Narrabri West. Unfortunately, they were too good for us but the girls did our school proud with their outstanding sportsmanship throughout the game.
Our final game was against Tamworth Public. Our girls dominated the game with their pitching, batting and running. Due to this game being a friendly and no official score being taken, we let Tamworth Public take the draw and allowed them to play a third game (we had already played 3).
Well done to my fabulous team of Charlotte, Harriet, Bonnie, Stella, Emily, Susie, Airlee, Lataya, Ava, Layla and Larna who gave it all their best both at training and on the game day. You represented our school and team well with your sportsmanship and made our school proud.
Next term, on Tuesday the 22nd of July our PSS Boys Softball team will play in their Knockout Gala Day. We look forward to hearing all about their day after that.
PSSA Softball
In Week 6, Emily and Charlotte Vesey travelled to Blacktown for the PSSA Softball competition for four days. Emily pitched really well in many of the games and Charlotte played catcher to her sister, taking many great balls. The team had three wins over the course of the competition against: McKillop, South Coast and Hunter. Overall, the North West girls team finished 9th out of 13, but what a wonderful learning experience it was for both girls and most importantly they had fun, despite the blisters!
Emily: ‘My favourite part was the new experiences, making new friends (and playing against friends in other teams) and getting to play on the main diamond.’
Charlotte: ‘My favourite part was making new friends and having Emily pitch to me.’

Football (Soccer) Gala Days
In Week 9, our PSSA boys’ and girls’ football (soccer) teams competed at the PSSA Football Gala Day. In the lead-up to this day, 25 boys and 20 girls in Years 5 and 6 demonstrated great dedication and pride for Tamworth West, by giving up their break times to attend tryouts, training sessions, and team talks. Thank you to all students who participated in the tryouts and for displaying great resilience and sportsmanship throughout the weeks leading up to the day.
On both days, Miss May and Mrs Nuske took 15 students to the gala days, which were held at Riverside sporting fields.
Our boys played two games on the day, the first against Tamworth South PS and the second against Kootingal PS. The games were very close, and our Tamworth West boys put in a great effort across the entire day, unfortunately, we were unable to grasp a win in the end. However, the boys enjoyed their day out of the classroom and demonstrated excellent sportsmanship and teamwork!
Patrick Miskle and Kasch Lockrey came away with some goals, while Hamish Blackman, Lincoln Moffat and Maketana Sayabath all took turns in goals.
Our girls started the day with a game against Tamworth South PS. They played their hearts out and showed the Tamworth West can-do attitude, especially when most girls hadn’t played soccer before. The girls’ spirit continued to be displayed throughout their next game, against Nemingha PS. Although we didn’t come away with a win, the girls are commended for consistently supporting and cheering each other on throughout the two games.
Evie Glyde was able to score an incredible goal against Nemingha, while Maddy Ayers, Susie Cantrill and Layla Hatch put the gloves on for the day.
Thank you to all the students for making both gala days enjoyable and successful. Miss May and Mrs Nuske are very proud of the maturity displayed, along with the PBL expectations of Respect, Resilience, and Responsibility.
Well done, Tamworth West!
-Kahla May
Touch Football Gala Day
On June 11th, selected students from Stage 3 participated in the Touch Football Gala Day, and what a fantastic day it was! Our students showcased their skills and sportsmanship in a spirited environment full of competitive fun.
Although the girls faced tough competition and did not win their two games, they demonstrated remarkable growth and resilience, culminating in an impressive long-distance try during their second game.
The boys had an exciting day as well, playing three games and celebrating victory in their second match. Across all games, they scored some fantastic tries, displaying great teamwork and determination.
We are incredibly proud of our students, who not only played well but also represented our school with exemplary behaviour. They truly are an asset to our community!
