Welcome to our newly formatted newsletter. This online platform will not only allow us to share more photos with our families and community, but a live calendar and we will also be able to embed video footage moving forward.
A big thank you to Scott Munday for researching and readying a platform that will work for our school and to the P & C for ratifying our decision to move to a monthly online newsletter.
I hope you enjoy the content.
Swimming Carnivals
We enjoyed a very successful school swimming carnival on Tuesday, 9 February 2021 at the Tamworth Olympic Pool. The weather was warm and perfect for swimming. The level of participation from our students was great, with much cheering and encouragement in support of all swimmers no matter what their ability level. The carnival ran smoothly all day and was well organised by Mrs Milton and Mr Willis.
Congratulations to our swimmers who then went on to represent Tamworth West Public School at the Tamworth Zone PSSA swimming carnival last Friday. We are very proud of you and your efforts.
Please ensure that you read the Sport section of this newsletter where we acknowledge the individual achievements of our swimmers.
Assemblies
We have recommenced our short merit assemblies in line with COVID guidelines. Assemblies are held on Tuesday afternoons with Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students meeting in odd weeks (weeks 5, 7 and 9 this term) and Year 3, Year 4, Year 5 and Year 6 students meeting in even weeks (week 6, 8 and 10 this term).
Merit awards, Star of the Week awards, PBL awards and Best at West awards will be presented at assemblies. Due to COVID regulations we are only able to assemble for 15 minutes and at this time, parents and carers are unable to attend assemblies.
Please read the Assembly Awards section of this newsletter where we acknowledge our award recipients.
Student Leaders Induction Assembly
In keeping with COVID restrictions, we held a very concise Student Leadership Induction Assembly on Monday, 8 February 2021. To support our families, we recorded the assembly and took photos of all student leaders and leadership groups for all families involved.

Class Information Sessions
Earlier this year we postponed our Class Information Sessions as we were unsure that we were able to meet current COVID restrictions.
All our teachers recognise the importance of communication and feel that our meetings at the start of the year are such an important opportunity to provide families with information regarding the upcoming academic year.
As a result, we have rescheduled these sessions to suit the needs of each stage of learning and will ensure that they are in line with current COVID guidelines. Apart from ensuring that we have a space that meets physical distancing requirements, we also have an obligation to ensure that visitors to the school adhere to our required sign-in procedures.
Each supervisor will send out information pertinent to their stage. Please be on the lookout for this information as it would be wonderful to have parents and carers take advantage of these opportunities.
If you are unable to attend your allocated time or session, please remember that you are always welcome to contact your child’s classroom teacher to discuss any questions you may have. If you do not have your teacher’s email address or school mobile number, please telephone the front office on 6765 8316 and your teacher will return your call when he or she is available.
Stages are offering the following opportunities:
Early Stage 1 (Kindergarten)
Our kindergarten teachers will be offering individual parent/carer interviews. These interviews will occur across weeks 7 & 8 of this term. The information note that teachers will send out will inform you how to book your individual appointment using our online system and relevant COVID guidelines that will need to be followed.
Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2)
Our Year 1 and Year 2 teachers will be offering a parent/carer onsite information session. This will be held on the evening of Thursday, 11 March 2021. The information note that teachers will send out will inform you of specific times and relevant COVID guidelines that will need to be followed.
Stage 2 (Years 3 & 4)
Our Year 3 and Year 4 teachers will be offering a parent/carer onsite information session. This will be held on the evening of Thursday, 18 March 2021. The information note that teachers will send out will inform you of specific times and relevant COVID guidelines that will need to be followed.
Stage 3 (Years 5 & 6)
Our Year 5 and Year 6 teachers will be offering a parent/carer onsite information session. This will be held on the evening of Tuesday, 2 March 2021. The information note that teachers will send out will inform you of specific times and relevant COVID guidelines that will need to be followed.
Please note, this session will also include information on the Year 6 to 7 enrolment process and staff from our local high schools will also be in attendance.
Special Education Classes (K-3M, 3-6S & 4-6D)
Our special education teachers will be offering individual parent/carer interviews which will also incorporate the annual verification meetings. These interviews will occur across week 8 of this term. Teachers will be in contact with parents and carers to organise an interview time and provide you with relevant COVID guidelines that will need to be followed.

Year 6-7 Transition
I am looking forward to seeing the parents of year 6 students at the stage 3 information evening on 2 March 2021. At this meeting, I will be discussing the high school application process and providing parents with the appropriate forms. Representatives from the three local high schools, Oxley High, Peel High and Tamworth High have been invited to give parents a brief overview of their school and in particular transition opportunities. This is an essential step in the process of students transitioning from year 6 to Year 7 and I strongly encourage all parents of year 6 students to attend.
The Resilience Project
Please take time to read the information on the Wellbeing page regarding The Resilience Project launch. There is a short video link that explains how, as a whole school approach, we are addressing student wellbeing. Over the coming weeks there will be a series of video links on the Facebook page and school website that explain the fundamental principles of Gratitude, Empathy, Mindfulness and Emotional Literacy. I am very excited to begin this journey with the students, staff and families at Tamworth West.
Attendance
Education for your child is important and regular attendance at school is essential for your child to achieve their educational best and increase their career and life options. At Tamworth West Public School, we work in partnership with parents to encourage and support regular attendance of children. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.
What if my child has to be away from school?
On occasion, your child may need to be absent from school. Justified reasons for student absences may include:
being sick, or having an infectious disease
having an unavoidable medical appointment
being required to attend a recognised religious holiday
exceptional or urgent family circumstance e.g. attending a funeral.
Following an absence from school you must ensure that within 7 days you provide your child’s school with a verbal or written explanation for the absence. If an explanation is not provided within 7 days your child’s absence will be marked as unjustified.
Principals may request medical certificates or other documentation when frequent or long term absences are explained as being due to illness. Principals may also seek parental permission to speak with medical specialists to obtain information to collaboratively develop a health care plan to support your child. If the request is denied, the principal can record the absences as unjustified.
Travel
Families are encouraged to travel during school holidays. If travel during school term is necessary, discuss this with your child’s school principal. An Application for Extended Leave may need to be completed. Absences relating to travel will be marked as leave on the roll and therefore contribute to your child’s total absences for the year.
-Sara Spinks
Deputy Principal
All staff at Tamworth West Public School work to support each student to learn and to grow as a person. A part of this is acknowledging the learning that children bring with them to school. We appreciate that current restrictions have changed how staff and students connect and would ask that if parents would like to discuss student learning and support needs to contact their child’s classroom teacher.
All staff started the year with a range of professional learning programs to support teaching and learning and to fulfil mandatory requirements for their role. Teaching staff started the year working with Dr Janelle Wills from the Marzano Institute on methods to enhance student learning. This is the start of a 4 year relationship the school has formed with Hawker Brownlow professional learning to support the teacher professional learning to see that every student progresses in their learning whilst at Tamworth West P.S.
All staff have been working through mandatory training in Child Protection and the new Department of Education Code of Conduct. In addition executive staff have been working through training in Disability Standards. The school will also be commencing a program to support student and staff wellbeing with the use of ‘Smiling Minds’ as part of The Resilience Project. In addition teaching staff have been working to complete a COVID continuity of education learning plan.
-Grant Scarborough
Deputy Principal
We are continuing with our collaborative planning each week where stages have a day of which consists of 2 hours RFF and then they work together with their Instructional Leaders to analyse data, moderate work samples and plan pre- and post-assessments. This is a valuable experience for our teachers to develop a shared understanding of what is being taught and to learn from each other. Teachers are able to openly talk about what is working well in their class and give advice to each other when it is needed. It has been wonderful to see our teachers working collaboratively in order to allow our students receive the best education.
Kindergarten Teachers have been busy completing the Best Start Literacy and Numeracy Assessment over the past few weeks. Teachers will use the data collected with other data collected to plan and write effective teaching and learning programs will assts students to build their skills and knowledge in different areas of English. Parents will receive a letter which will give them an overview of what their children could do in the areas of Literacy a nd Numeracy at the time of testing.

In each edition of the newsletter, we introduce you to some of our valued members of staff. This month please meet...
Sarah McInnes
Teacher, 5M
My name is Sarah McInnes and I’ve recently joined the Stage 3 team at Tamworth West as a Year 5 classroom teacher. I’m a first-year graduate from the University of Wollongong and I moved to Tamworth in October 2020, after completing teaching practicums at Nemingha PS and Somerton PS during my degree. I was fortunate enough to work casually at a number of public schools in the region in Term 4 last year, including Duri, Tamworth, Kootingal and Nemingha. I’m an avid indoor plant collector, love cooking/baking and enjoy watching a good crime docuseries whilst practising my crocheting skills. I’m loving being a part of the Tamworth West team and look forward to being at TWPS for many years to come.
Adrian Wood
Teacher, 4W
Hi I'm Adrian Wood and I'm a Classroom Teacher on Year 4 (4W) this year. This is my second year of teaching, and I spent my first year in 2020 at Walcha Central School on a 4/5 class.
I enjoy listening to music and reading in my spare time.
A fun fact about me is that I used to play American Football in Wollongong for several years!
Tamworth West Public School would like to welcome Rosy, a therapy dog-in-training. Rosy is a very friendly miniature labradoodle. She is very soft, with a non-shedding, hypo-allergenic coat. Rosy is still a puppy and she is loving learning how to be an effective therapy dog for the students who need some extra support in the School Counsellor Room. Students are encouraged to support Rosy’s learning by remaining calm when interacting with her and listening carefully to instructions by staff when approaching her. It is important that students remember to ask before patting Rosy while she is still in-training.
Rosy will mostly be working in the School Counsellor Room, but may occasionally be seen receiving training around the school, and even welcoming students to school some mornings. Rosy will be used to support students who are experiencing social, cognitive and emotional difficulties. Rosy will be learning to provide very specific therapy techniques to help with self-esteem, communication, memory, problem-solving and emotional regulation. Rosy looks forward to meeting you all.
Welcome to 2021 and may it be a better year for us all. I hope everyone who was lucky enough to have a break in the holidays enjoyed the time with their family. I am sure though we all breathed a small sigh of relief when school started back.
Last term the P&C ran a guessing competition which was very well supported by our community. We raised $1,440.00 for our school so a very big thank you to those who contributed. Congratulations to all of the winners! I am sure you have by now enjoyed your prizes .
I would like to welcome any new parents/carers to our school and am hoping this year we will see more of our parents/carers join our P&C. We are only a small but very committed team and we do need new members as two of our executive will be leaving the school at the end of the year. Our meetings are held on the second Monday of each month at 5.30 pm in the staffroom so please feel free to come along and participate. It is an excellent way to find out the happenings of our school first hand as well as to meet other parents/carers. Get more involved with your children's school.....it is very rewarding! Our next meeting is on 8 March 2021.
At the end of last year the P&C purchased basketball singlets for our school teams. This could only happen due to the fundraising we have throughout the year. This year we will again be holding our very popular Easter raffle fundraiser. Tickets will go home with the children shortly and are due back in on 19 March 2021. The raffle will be drawn on 29 March 2021. Prizes will be Easter hampers and we are again asking for any donations of chocolates or anything 'Eastery' (books, crafts etc) from our parents/carers. These can be left at the school office.
We will again be having the Easter bun fundraiser from Bakers Delight so there is a lot to look forward to in the next month or so.
The P&C sells pre-loved uniforms. Funds from the sale of these go back to our school. If you are in need of any uniforms please inquire at the front office and staff will pass on the telephone number of the committee member. If you have any pre-loved uniforms you would like to donate to the P&C, these can be left in the front office.
I hope you are all enjoying Term 1 and look forward to seeing you all whether it be at our next meeting or outside the gates at pickup.
Regards,
Jacki Galvin

Welcome to Kindergarten 2021!
Welcome to Stage 1!
Year 2 Dancing Divas
This term 2D and 2L started Stage 1 sport rotations with dance. We soon realised that there are some dancing divas in our year level with some taking the time after school to perfect their moves! Students thoroughly enjoyed exploring a variety of dances over their 3 week dance focus with the Mexican Hat Dance and the Nutbush being two of the favourites. Mrs Lothian showed her age with an outdated version of the Time Warp, while Miss Natalie carved up the dance floor in the Macarena.
Year 1 have been busy learning about 2D and 3D shapes. We have used our knowledge of different shapes to create beautiful art with shapes. We have also been very busy learning many new words in our Aboriginal language classes with Mrs Spicer, including learning Australian animal names!
In Geography this term, students will start learning about places in Australia and what makes them special. We look forward to hearing about where students and their families have visited in our amazing country.
Wow! What a great start to the 2021 school year! This year has seen some changes to the Stage 2 teaching staff and it’s my pleasure to be working with such collaborative and enthusiastic team members.
They are:
Miss Kahla May – 4M
Mr Adrian Wood – 4W
Mrs Courtney Lyon – 3L
Miss Felicity Bagshaw 3B (Relieving Stage 2 Assistant Principal)
This term we have been learning how to write factual descriptions. Students have been pulling apart examples of descriptions and describing the structure that makes up a good factual description. We have enjoyed listening to students discuss different vocabulary they are using and give reasons why they chose some words over others! Our students are looking forward to sharing our factual descriptions with you later in the term.
Over the past four weeks, students across all the Stage 2 classes were placed into 4 different groups that are then used to rotate around different activities. This has included sporting activities on a Thursday where students were given the opportunity to learn new skills and games with different teachers. Students enjoyed a variety of games and the overall participation has been excellent. These 4 groups have also been used for CAPA (Creative arts) groups on a Friday afternoon where again students were taught different skills and techniques to produce a variety of artworks and medium. This has included using the iPads for photography, watercolour paints and drawing using pastels and pencils.
For the next 4 weeks our focus will be on STEM (Science, Technology and Mathematics) where students will again, rotate around the different teachers for a variety of activities. We have also welcomed 6 students from 3-6S to come and join us for these activities as part of their integration.
Stage 2 saw many students attend the school swimming carnival a few weeks ago. It was great to see the number of students who joined in numerous swimming events across the day - both competitive and novelty events. Participation in our sports carnivals is a valuable way to contribute to overall school and sporting house spirit and it is important that we encourage our children to have a go.
-Felicity Bagshaw
Stage 3 classes have been working on various styles of self portraits over the first few weeks of Term 1. Some classes have worked on Julian Opie style portraits, focusing on minimal features and dark outlines, whilst others have used newspaper to create a profile silhouette of themselves, or followed step-by-step portrait tutorials to try and create anatomically accurate self portraits. We have loved seeing the creativity of our Stage 3 students and enjoy having these as colourful additions to our classrooms.
3-6D and 3-6S Swimming Carnival
The stage 2 and 3 students from 3-6D and 3-6S had a wonderful time at the Swimming Carnival. Mrs Milton kept everyone very busy in the small pool with her very challenging and entertaining novelty activities.
It was lots of fun and we would like to thank Mrs Milton for doing such a great job!
What’s Cooking in Special Ed?
It has been a very busy start to the year in the Special Ed unit. Ms McEnerney, Mrs Sinclair and Mrs Diss have enjoyed kicking off the year with some great cooking classes. These activities have been specifically designed to integrate learning outcomes in English, Mathematics, Science and Personal Development and Health.
The cooking classes have been a big hit with the students who have already explored the changes in matter by making Mars Bar Slice and Popcorn. 3D objects and estimation skills were examined when students made ice cream cones and iced and decorated biscuits.
RFF stands for ‘Release from Face to Face' and refers to the 2 hours a week when our classroom teachers get released from class for administration and planning time.
In addition to this, and in line with our Strategic Improvement Plan, our classroom teachers receive an additional 2 ¼ hours a week working together in a collaborative team to monitor student growth & attainment, discuss high impact teaching strategies and improve teaching practice.
At Tamworth West Public School, we run specialised programs in Science, Creative Arts, computer skills, Aboriginal language and Library during these times where students benefit from our teachers' expertise in these areas.
This month we have inserts from Miss Cunneen and Mrs Ward.
Creative Arts – Miss Cunneen
Each week students attend a Creative Arts session with me, Miss Cunneen. At this stage, students are working on drama, with a particular focus on improvisation.
On Wednesday, 10 March 2021 approximately 90 students from stage 3 will be travelling to the Civic Theatre in Newcastle to watch a performance of WICKED, the musical.
This excursion has been organised to support the strands of drama and music in the stage 3 program.
Have a great time Stage 3 and I am sure we will have a wonderful report for you in our next newsletter.
During drama sessions, Year 3 have been making masks and acting out some fairy tales. One week it was Jack and the Beanstalk with children even being the beanstalk. We always fun in drama!
Library – Mrs Ward
Welcome back to the Library for 2021. Welcome to all our returning and our new parents. It has been great to see your children over the past weeks. My name is Mrs Natalie Ward and I am the Teacher Librarian.
Hopefully this year will be full of fun activities that will encourage your children to read. Book Week is scheduled for August and the theme for 2021 is “New Worlds, Old Worlds, Other Worlds”. More information will come home at a later date outlining our celebrations for Book Week.
Library days for your children are as follows:
Stage 3 (Years 5 & 6, including 3/6S) – Monday
Stage 2 (Year 3 & 4, including 3/6D) – Wednesday
Kindergarten (including K3M) – Thursday
Stage 1 (Years 1 & 2) – Friday
Please send your child with a library bag so that they can borrow a book each week. Did you know? Reading 20 minutes a day can show an amazing improvement in your child’s education…
In Library lessons this year, we will be focussing on reading for enjoyment, discussion and comprehension of text, and research skills.
These skills are all improvement life-long skills for your children.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Ward through the Office on 0267658316.
School Swimming Carnival
On Tuesday, 9 February, 2021 all 3-6 students from Tamworth West primary students were able to attend our annual swimming carnival. This year the carnival was held at Tamworth Olympic (City) Pool. The day was clear and warm and all students were able to get into the water and get wet at some stage throughout the day. It was particularly great to see our competitive swimmers participating in as many events as possible to win points for their House.
Our Winning House for the carnival was Wentworth, followed closely behind by Farrer, Parkes and Macarthur.
Congratulations to our Age Champions:
Junior Girls Champion: Jessie Sandison-Welch
Junior Boys Champion: Naite Syron
11 Year Girls Champion: Mackenzie Kelly
11 Year Boys Champion: Bryson Gross
Senior Girls Champion: Maddison Mason
Senior Boys Champion: Jaxon Syron
Thank you to all the staff for their assistance leading up to and during the carnival. Thanks also to the Peel High School students who offered their help and Mr Flanagan who offered their help throughout the day.
TWPS Zone Squad
Congratulations to the following squad members. These children were successful in qualifying to represent our school at the local Zone carnival:
Jaxon Syron, Naite Syron, Zac Galvin, Eva Wrigley, Miranda Wrigley, Travis Mumford, Cameron Mumford, Madison Mason, Jace Dawson, Bryson Gross, Sienna Mulligan, Mackenzie Kelly, Claire Gardner, Carter Radford, Jessie Sandison-Welch and Emily Innes.
Zone PSSA Basketball Trials
On Thursday 18 February, 2021 the Zone boys' and girls' basketball trials were held at the Sports Dome. Students were run through a variety of drills to help them display their skill levels. They then went on to scrimmage in some games. 6 students from Tamworth West attended the trials. Lachie Snape, Cooper Flick, Zac Galvin and Blake Sampson trialed for the boys, whilst Mackenzie Kelly and Sophie Spence tried out for the girls' team. All our students trialed well, with Zac Galvin and Mackenzie Kelly being fortunate to be selected into the zone teams to participate at the Regional Trials. Congratulations to all students!
North West Basketball Trials
Following the Zone Trials the North West Regional Carnival was held on Friday, 26 February 2021. Zac Galvin was successful in being selected into the Boys’ North West team who will compete at State PSSA Carnival in Gosford early next term. Mackenzie Kelly made the possible and probable selection and was named as a reserve for the North West Girls. A pleasing result for both of our basketballers.
-Jonathan Willis
Zone Swimming
Well done to the following children that represented TWPS proudly at the Tamworth Zone Swimming Carnival on Friday, 19 February 2021. Our 14 strong team performed well throughout the day, with several placings. A special mention and congratulations to our Junior Girls Relay Team that have been selected to represent Tamworth Zone at the Regional Carnival in Armidale. Also, to Mackenzie Kelly who will attend the North West Carnival and compete in the 11 Year Girls 50m Freestyle and 50m Backstroke events.
Thank you Mrs Francine Wrigley, who was able to support the team and direct students to assigned races in my absence, as I fulfilled official duties. Thanks also to Mrs Joh Clarkson who was able to ‘supply’ a timekeeper for the day. Congratulations to the TWPS team, they were a delight to take away and I was proud to be associated with them.
A massive thanks to all the family members that were able to attend as spectators and adhered to COVID rules while in attendance. Please have a look at the photo roll attached to the newsletter, many great photos of students with their parents and proud moments captured at the completion of respective races.
