Tamworth West Public School
AUGUSt 2021
Principal's Report
Hello everyone and welcome to our first newsletter for term 3. What an exciting start to the term it has been with many classes celebrating (and watching) the amazing accomplishments of our Australian athletes completing at the Tokyo Olympics, and more importantly, the incredible moments that unite nations and transcend sports.
The lessons our students can learn from the Olympics are invaluable. I was reading an article the other day that stated,
…Take away the hoopla, the artifice, and the controversies that have become part of the Games over the years, and what is left is a basic human struggle. Olympians are people, like you and I, who dare to challenge themselves before millions of witnesses. It is this courage that I want to share with my kids because while we won’t all struggle in such a public arena, we all have our struggles. And I want my kids to make the brave choice to push past their own personal doubts and fears and reach for their dreams…
My wish for all students at Tamworth West PS is that they not only reach for their dreams, they achieve them!
Staffing
This term has seen a few changes to staffing at Tamworth West PS.
Firstly, we congratulate Miss Stevie-Lee Sutherland on her permanent appointment to Westdale PS. Miss Sutherland started her appointment at the beginning of this term and we were fortunate to be able to replace her with Ms Dee Burns. Ms Burns has been working with the students in 1S throughout the year and has been able to maintain the teaching and learning program with minimal disruption.
At the end of last term, we also said goodbye to Ms Jane Baker. Ms Baker has accepted a position at Farrer Memorial Agricultural High School. As a result, we have a new member of staff in our front office. Ms Ashlee Sephton has joined us and is fitting in beautifully.
We welcome Mrs Kim Wilson to Tamworth West PS. Mrs Wilson is working with 3-6S and is doing a remarkable job.
We also welcome Mr Tom Patterson to Tamworth West PS. Mr Patterson is a School Learning Support Officer and is working with some targeted students across the school.
Mrs Kim Wilson
Teacher - 3-6S
Ms Ashlee Sephton
School Administration Officer
Mr Tom Patterson
School Learning Support Officer
In addition, I am sure that you all join me in extending our heartfelt congratulations to Mr Scott Munday and his wife, Amanda, on the safe arrival of their second beautiful daughter, Aubrey. Mr Munday is returning to work this week after spending time transitioning to life with another new born.
Curriculum and Policy Monitoring (CPM)
The Department of Education uses a range of internal processes to monitor curriculum and policy implementation in schools.
These processes give the department, as a system, assurance that all schools are meeting the minimum requirements for the registration of government schools.
All schools must understand the links between the Education Act and the policy, Curriculum planning and programming, assessing and reporting to parents K-12 Policy, and the Registration manual for the government schooling system.
CPM meetings allow the department to meet its requirement to monitor policy and curriculum implementation compliance, and:
help ensure the implementation of policy and curriculum in schools
locate externally mandated compliance within a school improvement context
provide opportunities for professional dialogue and sharing amongst schools
reinforce a culture which demonstrates quality internal assurance processes at all levels
ensure that student learning and well-being remains at the centre of schools.
This year, Tamworth West PS has been selected to participate in a CPM meeting.
We have been paired with Oxley Vale PS to participate in a guided discussion which will be led by a trained facilitator and assisted by a subject matter expert (SME). Our Director, Educational Leadership, Ms Ruythe Dufty, will host the meeting and provide advice and feedback when needed.
As part of the discussion, we have to present evidence that demonstrates we have met minimum requirement. Our evidence is drawn from the everyday operation of our school and the scheduled discussion will allow us to present our evidence.
Our CPM meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, 10 August 2021 and will focus on Stage 3 HSIE for curriculum and the policy area of ‘Safe and supportive environment’, which incorporates child protection and student welfare. During our meeting we will concentrate on:
· compliance based on evidence
· best practice and School Excellence.
A CPM summary report will be produced as a record of the meeting. It will include a record of the evidence presented and the professional discussion which takes place. Ms Dufty will follow up any next steps, if necessary, and finalise the report.
The purpose of the CPM summary report is for school improvement and not performance management.
I will be sure to update you on the results of this meeting in our next newsletter.
Student Enrolments for 2022
Tamworth West PS is currently accepting local enrolment applications for all grades for 2022. Based on current anticipated numbers, we have declined a number of non-local applications. This is because we are currently approaching capacity and through policy, the Department has stated that no additional accommodation (permanent or demountable) will be provided by the DoE to cater for increased enrolments resulting from non-local placements.
Anyone is entitled to submit an enrolment application and at Tamworth West PS, we have a placement panel that considers and makes recommendations on all non-local enrolment applications. The criteria that is considered for non-local applications includes:
Siblings eg. Other sibling, in residence with the student, already enrolled in a mainstream class at Tamworth West PS
Safety and supervision eg. Care for the student before and after school
Proximity and access to the school eg. Distance between home and school
Compassionate eg. Case for supporting enrolment at the school
There are two very important things to note in relation to these criteria:
Firstly, parents and carers are advised that although the use of the sibling’s criteria has been given higher priority in the past, while ever we are at, or over, capacity, this WILL NOT guarantee enrolment of non-local students even if siblings are already enrolled at Tamworth West PS.
Secondly, at Tamworth West PS the sibling criteria does not extend to students enrolled in any of our specialist support classes. This is because, although we house three support classes at Tamworth West PS, they are regional resources and students are enrolled into these classes through the Tamworth Office. Siblings of students enrolled in support classes are able to attend their local school.
Kindergarten 2022 Transition Days
Enrolments are quickly filling up for Kindergarten 2022. If you have not yet submitted an enrolment form for a little person who will be starting school next year, please contact our front office.
Students who are enrolled will be invited to attend our Kinder 22 Transition Days which will commence in week 9 of this term.
We look forward to meeting all our new Kindergarten students and helping them prepare for “Big School”.
School Athletics Carnival
Our annual school athletics carnival will be held on Thursday, 5 August 2021 at the Tamworth Athletics Centre. All grades, Kindergarten to Year 6 will participate in the carnival and students have been practising in preparation for the events.
Due to COVID planning restrictions, parents and carers are not able to attend our carnival this year. With the exception of students competing in the 800 m and 200 m events, all students will be bused to the venue and back. Students in the early events will need to be dropped at the netball courts. A teacher will meet students and accompany them to the athletics track. Students will then return to school on the buses at the conclusion of the carnival.
The school canteen will operate a BBQ on the day. Sausage sandwiches and drinks will be available for purchase. Sausage sandwiches will be $2.50 and drinks will be as per the usual canteen menu.
Students are to wear their school sport uniform OR house colours. Students opting to wear house colours are reminded to be sun safe and to wear clothes appropriate to being able to participate in athletic activities.
All students should have returned their permission note and $5.00 (subsidised cost for the day) to their classroom teacher already. If you have not done this, please ensure you do this by tomorrow.

ATTENDANCE
The Importance of Arriving on Time
At Tamworth Wests Public School, we place high importance on student attendance. When your child attends school every day, learning becomes easier, and your child will build and maintain friendships with other children.
Arriving at school and class on time:
ensures that students do not miss out on important learning activities scheduled early in the day
helps students learn the importance of punctuality and routine
gives students time to greet their friends before class
reduces classroom disruption.
Lateness is recorded as a partial absence and must be explained by the parent or carer. If your child is late to school, you must contact the administration office and explain their absence. We understand that COVID restrictions make coming into the office more difficult, and it is not always practical, so we need you to give us a call and let us know why your child is late.
Regular Appointments
If your child attends a regular appointment with a therapist or medical practitioner, please contact the administration office and you will be provided with the appropriate form to complete which requests service provision to be conducted during school hours. The purpose of this form is so that we can track students' attendance and reasons for absences. If approved, your child will be marked as school business, instead of leave. We encourage, where possible, that these appointments are made outside of school hours, however understand that this is not always possible.
Attendance Incentive Program
To encourage prompt and regular attendance, we are introducing a new class based incentive. Information is explained in the Attendance Rewards Flyer. It is important to note that only children who arrive on time and are at school for the full day can enter the weekly draw. Those students marked as school business will be included.
SCHOOL PHOTOS
School photo days have been scheduled for Wednesday 18 and Thursday 19 August 2021.
Students are asked to wear their full winter school uniform. Boys are to wear a blue long sleeved shirt, tie, grey pants and black shoes. Girls are to wear a white shirt, tie, tunic, navy stockings/socks and a blue or white ribbon/bow.
Your child’s personalised ordering envelope has been given out along with this note. Please read the information printed on the envelope and complete where necessary. All envelopes are to be returned to the front office, not class teachers.
PAYMENTS
The school photographer has asked that you do not seal envelopes inside each other as each child needs to have their own completed envelope on the day of photos. It is vital to the smooth operation of the school photographer’s pre-payment system that each child returns their own envelope. Please enclose the correct money as no change can be given or alternatively, pay online. No late cash payments will be accepted. Only online orders will be accepted after the day of photography or paid over phone on 02 6628 0511.
SIBLING PHOTOGRAPHS
Sibling photo ordering envelopes can be obtained from the office. To avoid confusion, all sibling photo orders and payments are to be kept separate by using the sibling envelopes. Online payments for sibling photos cut off at 7.00 am on the day of photography, after that only cash will be accepted on the day.
Further enquiries, please call the office on 67 658 316

Teaching & Learning
Welcome back to Term 3
We started the term with our teachers participating in professional learning with Dr Janelle Wills on the school development day around the New Art and Science of Teaching (NASOT), with an emphasis on guided reading. It was very informative and it has been wonderful working with teachers across all stages on how to incorporate some new strategies into classroom practice.
Year 1 Phonics Screening Check
In Weeks 4-6 of this term, all year one students (attending public schools across the state) will be involved in a mandatory Phonics Screening Check. This short assessment provides teachers with an overview of a student’s progress in phonics. The analysis assists teachers to make decisions that will help inform the next steps to meet a student’s individual learning needs.
The assessment takes around 5-7 minutes and is carried out by the classroom teacher with each student individually. The students will be asked to read 40 words aloud. These words include 20 real words and 20 nonsense words. The nonsense words are used to see if the student is able to use their knowledge of blending to read a word rather than their memory of having seen that word before. If your child is struggling, the teacher will stop the check. The check is designed not to be stressful for your child.
If you have any further inquiries, please talk to your child’s class teacher.
3-6 News
Across stages 2 and 3, teachers have been working on helping children to unpack mathematical word problems. Students have been encouraged to break the problem down into four steps:
1. Identify key information in the problem;
2. Understand what the question is asking them to do. What operation will they use and how many steps are involved?
3. Solve the problem;
4. Re-read the problem and Check the working out; Have I answered the question? and Does my answer make sense?
Maybe you could give your child a mathematical word problem and see how they go solving it!
We thank you for continuing to support your child’s learning.

Yaama,
Week 10 of last term saw our school celebrate NAIDOC week. The children enjoyed a variety of cultural activities in class, held discos and had a formal assembly with many award recipients across the school.
Excursions were also a highlight of the week with positive feedback from the students who attended. Unfortunately, due to the weather, Kindergarten and Stage 2 excursions were postponed. At this stage we are waiting for the COVID restrictions to ease so that these excursions can go ahead.
Kind regards,
Jo Spicer
P&C News
Welcome to Term 3 and who, in their wildest dreams, would think we would be back to all of our COVID restrictions this far into our year. They are certainly testing times and all we can do is have patience and abide by the regulations and hopefully this will pass sooner rather than later.
The P&C has been busy in the background as per usual. We have made a $5000 donation to the school to purchase some new outdoor furniture which arrived in the school holidays and has already been assembled by Peter (the school maintenance man). They look awesome and will make a huge difference to the students' meal times.
We are hoping to hold our Fathers Day stall again this year (COVID rules permitting) and have already purchased the gifts. Fingers crossed we are able to.
The preloved uniform pool is still running. Look out on our Facebook page to see what is available. If you are after anything specifically, please ask at the office and they will pass on your details to me.
A huge thank you once again to all of those families who have donated uniforms. The monies raised go back into our school.
Our next meeting is on Monday, 9 August at 5.30pm.
Stay safe everyone!

Early Stage 1
Welcome to Kindergarten 2021!
Welcome back to term three. It is difficult to believe that we are in semester two of Kindergarten. The year is flying and there is still so much to learn.
At the end of last term Kindergarten finished their information reports on emus. For our first attempt at completing a project, our results were outstanding, and all Kindergarten students should be very proud of their efforts.
Fairy tales, Fables and Dreamtime Stories
This term we began our unit called Fairy tales, Fables and Dreamtime Stories.
Students are learning to retell a story using the correct sequence and to identify the beginning, middle and end of a story. Some English groups have been using story maps to help and our class puppets with the retelling of stories.
We have also had fun blowing up balloons and making popcorn as part of our sequencing lessons to help us sequence events accurately.
In Maths this term, we have started learning how to tell the time using o’clock. We have had fun making our own clocks, making a very large human clock, playing ‘What’s the Time Mr Wolf?” and learning how to record the hour, on a digital and analog clock.
This semester we begin our History Unit where we cover the following units: families, personal history, different families, and celebrations. Kinder has had fun drawing portraits of their families and understanding that can be families different.
Stage 1
Welcome back to Term 3!
NAIDOC WEEK EXCURSION
Year 1 and 2 students went on a wonderful adventure to Lynchwood Scout Camp as part of our NAIDOC Week celebrations. Students travelled 25 kilometres from school by bus past Moore Creek to explore the natural surroundings of our local area.
Students enjoyed a bushwalk and listened to Lenny Waters tell us an Aboriginal story about the area. We then designed our own boomerangs and learned how to throw them. We were lucky enough to be able to hear an amazing digeridoo performance by Mark Atkins.
Picasso’s Blue Guitar VS Tamworth’s Golden Guitar
The year 2 artist focus in Term 2 was Pablo Picasso. Students researched Picasso’s life and explored his famous artworks. They painted their own ‘Blue Guitar,’ exploring the techniques of Picasso’s cubism artworks. Students then created interpretations of our very own ‘Tamworth Golden Guitar’. We have some wonderful artist in our year!
This term we have many interesting art projects in store. Year 1 are planning on doing some ocean related art works!
Reading Folders and Homework
Students in Year 1 and 2 have a reading folder that is changed daily Monday - Thursday. These levelled readers are at the level for your child to consolidate their reading skills. Readers can be kept for a night or a couple of nights depending on how you choose to use them at home. Some students are also reading other books at home. Please add these into their reading logs so the teachers can get a clear indication of how much your child is reading at home.
See our amazing work!
Here are some examples of some beautiful handwriting going on across the stage.
Procedure Writing
We have begun our new unit in literacy on procedure writing. Year 2 had a lovely time getting Mr Taggart to dress up in his best dress-up outfit and we discovered the importance of giving instructions in the right sequence to get the task done effectively. We think that Mr Taggart looks great in his new dress-up outfit!
Smiling Minds
Stage 1 has been exploring the benefits of mindfulness by engaging with the smiling minds program. Here is 1B doing some meditation in the glorious winter sun.
Resilience Project
Stage 1 has been loving the activities we have been completing in the Resilience project. We have been focussing on empathy and gratitude. Here is some of the work we have done.
Stage 2
Miss Kahla May – 4M
Mr Adrian Wood – 4W
Mrs Courtney Lyon – 3L
Miss Felicity Bagshaw 3B (Relieving Stage 2 Assistant Principal)
Welcome to August AND Term 3!
This year (and term) are going quickly and we have lots to look forward to.
Last term we celebrated NAIDOC Week. NAIDOC Week is a celebration of the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. Students did activities within their classrooms and we held a NAIDOC Disco one afternoon. All students received a glow wrist band for the disco and we danced the afternoon away.
Stage 2 was also booked in to attend a NAIDOC excursion with Lenny Waters, visiting the Marsupial Park, walking to the observatory and having a look inside. Due to the bad weather the excursion was postponed to this term, however we are waiting patiently for COVID restrictions to lift so we can do this. Stay tuned!
We also completed our unit last term on persuasive writing. The students wrote a persuasive piece on the topic “Recycling should be mandatory”. It was great to see the growth the students made across the term. Well done!
This term we are focusing on writing recounts. We started the term writing a recount all about the Olympic Day held last term. The teachers enjoyed reading our students’ responses.
Maths groups have continued this term. Our data and feedback from both staff and students have been positive. The teachers feel that the focused approach to whole number has been beneficial for all our students as it has allowed for a more targeted learning approach.
The athletics carnival is on Thursday, 5 August. Notes have been sent home and should have been returned. The school expectation is that ALL students attend the carnival. There will be a mixture of both novelty and competitive events on which means that even if students are not competing in the events, there will be other activities to participate in. Our students have been practising their athletic skills at school and I look forward to seeing them put into action!
It is important that students are at school each day and on time. If your child is away, you need to contact either the office or your classroom teacher directly. Texting the classroom teacher is a quick and easy way to let the teacher know that your child is away and the reason why. We have a number of great initiatives coming up to help encourage students to come to school on time.
Due to the COVID lock down we are still unsure of whether the Sydney excursion will go ahead. I have put the payments on hold until we receive more information. We are hoping to have a one night sleepover in the school hall as a ‘practice’ run.
The stage 2 teachers look forward to continuing to work with you this term.
Felicity Bagshaw
Stage 3
Stage 3
Term 3 of 2021, and we continue to experience the constraints of pandemic restrictions. We had hoped that as the year progressed, we would be able to see restrictions ease. As the variant of Covid spreads so does the need to adhere to guidelines.
As a result of the restrictions, we have had to cancel our much-anticipated Canberra excursion. Staff and students are disappointed about missing the major excursion for the second year in a row. Many great experiences had been planned and a highlight was certainly going to be a day spent on the snow fields. We hope to organise an overnight excursion later in the year for Stage 3 students, dependent upon restrictions.
All stage 3 classes continue to engage in The Resilience Project lessons. We have never had a greater need for developing gratitude, empathy and mindfulness in students than in our current climate. The program assists students regulate their emotions, identify emotions being experienced, manage their responses to situations and be grateful for who and what they have in their lives.
Despite the loss of many extra curricula activities, other opportunities do exist. Leadership and wellbeing roles are being fulfilled, yoga continues and attendance rewards are being introduced for all students K-6. Miss Nat is regularly in classrooms supporting students. 6W are able to work towards the Asia Connexions program in October. We also anticipate having the CPR program available for students later this term.
Stage 3 students have been practising athletic field events during weekly sports lessons. Sadly, parents are unable to attend the Athletics Carnival at the new complex, but Mr Munday will be sure to capture plenty of moments which will be uploaded to the school's Facebook page and website in the days following the carnival.
Child Protection lessons will be taught this term. It is mandatory to teach child protection education in every stage of learning from Kindergarten to Year 10 as part of the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) Personal Development, Health and Physical Education (PDHPE) K-10 Syllabus.
Thanks again to all of you during this trying period, you should take pride in knowing you are producing an independent, resilient young person who knows life presents challenges but is also full of possibilities. Thank you for allowing your children to be a part of our lives. We look forward to watching them grow and mature over the next term and a half.
Kind Regards,
Kirrily Milton
Special Ed
Wonderful Winter!
This term the students in K3M are learning about the amazing season – winter. We are exploring different aspects of winter like - how do animals cope in the cold weather, what happens in our gardens during the winter months and what do we do differently in during these cold days and nights? Our unit of work includes researching and writing information reports on Aussie animals. We will be studying the echidna, a curious little animal and our favourite, the wombat! We have been reading the ‘Snow Wombat’ a story about a cute little wombat’s travels through the high country and the different animals and people he meets along the way.
We have been learning how to sequence a series of events and our first lesson was ‘How to make hot chocolate’. The children enjoyed following a sequencing chart to complete this activity. We all had fun making a pretend campfire, toasting marshmallows, talking about things they enjoy doing to keep warm and listening to Australian folk songs.
We are looking forward to getting back out in the garden over the next few weeks and seeing what we can plant so it will be ready when spring arrives.
3-6D and 3-6S
This term the students in 3-6D and 3-6S have settled beautifully into their learning activities. Stage 2 are learning about First Contacts in history and Stage 3 are studying the super continent Pangaea in geography. Work continues to develop math skills in number patterns, fractions and problem solving. Students continue to develop their whole number skills and the ability to work with word problems.
All students have been learning how to sequence a series of events to support their reading and writing skills. Everyone has been working well during explicit writing lessons to examine journal entries. They are learning to identify the vocabulary and structure of this type of writing. Students had fun pretending they were a chicken in an egg and writing a diary entry from life inside the shell!
The Personal Development, Health and Physical Education focus for this term surrounds the development of a wide range of sports and movement skills. All students are looking forward to the upcoming athletics carnival.
We are anticipating another action-packed term.
RFF
Library
We will be celebrating Book Week in Week 5, 9 – 13 August. Celebrations will include a Book Week Parade and a Book Fair in the Library. The themes for Book Week are “New Worlds, Old Worlds, Other Worlds” and “Reading Oasis”.
Book Week Parade
The Book Week Parade will be on Tuesday, 10 August. Students can come to school dressed as their favourite book character. Students will then parade in their class groups and show the rest of the school and staff their fantastic costumes. Unfortunately, due to COVID restrictions, parents will be unable to attend but we will take lots of photos and videos of the parade. Boys and Girls Basketball Knockout Gala Day
On Wednesday, 9 June, the boys' basketball team faced off against Tamworth Public School in the first round of the PSSA Basketball knockout. The boys got off to a great start using their experience to their advantage. Tamworth West won the game 56 to 12 and advanced onto the next round to play Tamworth South. This was going to be a much more difficult game as both teams face off against each other regularly in the local competition. The boys had a great second quarter and took a 7-point lead going into the third. The boys continued to build on the lead to get up by as much as 12 points before Tamworth South came home strongly, forcing multiple turnovers into quick baskets to be down by 2 points with 12 seconds to go. Fortunately, the boys were able hang in a win the game. In the final game of the day we came up against Hillvue. The boys were a little tired but were far too strong winning the game 31 to 12.
Last week, the boys went on to play against Nemingha in the 5th round of the knockout. The boys gave the Nemingha team a 12-point lead at the end of the first quarter. After the break, they came back and played some good basketball but struggled to make up the initial difference and eventually went down to Nemingha by 11 points.
Our girls also played in the knockout the day before. Unfortunately, the girls dropped their first game to Tamworth Public 32 to 15. The girls found their mojo in the next two games defeating Glen Innes 32 to 6 and Kootingal 36 to 8.
Well done to both teams.

Sadly, the organising committee have made the decision to cancel this year's event. The committee are eager to have the event continue in 2022.
North West Cross Country Trials
Both Jaxon Syron and Cooper-Lee Shaw braved the bitter winter weather at the North West Cross Country Trials held at Coolah on Thursday, 10 June. Both boys were representing Tamworth Zone against the best long-distance runners in the region. Both boys did extremely well in the freezing, wet conditions. Jaxon Syron finished 10th overall in the 12/13-year boys, whilst Cooper-Lee Shaw finished 16th in the 11-year boys age group. Congratulations to Jaxon and Cooper-Lee!
Tamworth Zone PSSA Trials
Travis Mumford and Cooper-Lee Shaw were recently selected into the Tamworth Zone team to attend the North West trials in softball. Both boys were identified at the boys' softball gala day and chosen to attend the regional trials. Whilst neither student was selected into the North West team, both boys are in Year 5, and now have more experience at a regional level. Congratulations to Travis and Cooper-Lee!
Maddison Mason also attended the North West netball trials after being selected to represent the Tamworth Zone netball team. Maddison performed well at the trials and although she was not selected to represent the North West team, she should be proud of her achievement, trialling with many exceptionally talented athletes from across the region. Well done, Maddi!
Tamworth Primary Basketball Competition - Finals
Tamworth West had an exceptional season in the Tamworth Primary Competition with all 5 teams making semi-finals and 4 teams getting through to grand finals.
The Sixers had a close game against a strong St Nic’s team. The boys got off to a good start and held a two-point lead at the half. In the second half it was a different story with St Nic’s finding their rhythm, finding it a little easier to break down the Sixer's defense. The West boys kept it close until the final few minutes where the St Nic’s Bullets escaped with an 11-point victory.
Moving onto the grand final week, where West had a team in all 4 age divisions. The 3/4 girls who have played with as little as four players for most of the season were able to defeat Calrossy 24 to 1 in the semi to advance to the grand final against a strong Tamworth Public Team. The 3/4 girls put up a great fight against a TPS team who had not been defeated all season, going down 10 to 4.
In the 3/4 boys' competition, the Tamworth West boys got out of jail with some clutch free throws right at the end of the game. The West boys were undefeated all season, but the hype of the grand final almost got the better of them. The Calrossy Blue team kept it close the whole game, even holding the lead with less than a minute to go. Fortunately, they fouled our best shooter, Isaac Ryan, who was able to hold his nerve and knock down a crucial pair of free throws on two occasions in the last minute to help the boys take the win 25 to 23.
The Tamworth West 5/6 girls' team faced off against the St Nic’s Angels who had recently defeated the girls in the minor semi-final two weeks before. The 5/6 girls were more determined this time around and after shaking off their nerves, grabbed the lead. They were able to maintain control of the game and defeat the Angels 24 to 10.
Finally, in the 5/6 boys' A grade grand final, the West Fivers faced off against the St Nic’s Bullets. Both teams have had a history of tight battles against each other throughout the season, and this game was no exception. The Fivers, a team of all Year 5 students have done remarkably well to be one of the better teams in the A Grade competition. The boys held a narrow lead at half time but were soon put under a lot of pressure as St Nic’s grabbed the lead in the second half. The Fivers never gave up and showed great resolve to get the lead back with all but 2 minutes remaining. The Fivers prevailed in a remarkably close victory, winning 39 to 38.
The students would like to thank all the staff who came to support the students in their grand finals. A big thank you also to Mrs McInnes and Ben Pearce for giving up their time with Mr Willis to train and coach the players.
Congratulations to all teams and we look forward to watching our teams improve in the new season next semester.
If there are any 3/4 girls interested in playing, we do have spots available. Please speak to Mrs McInnes or Mr Willis.
