During this past month, we have been profoundly saddened at the passing of Mrs Tanya Sinclair, an excellent classroom teacher and valued member of the Tamworth West Public School community. Tanya fought a seven-year battle with cancer, always with courage and optimism. We will miss her positive attitude, her amazing smile, her fierce determination, her resilience and her friendship. She meant a lot to the students and staff of Tamworth West Public School. Her physical presence is gone, but the lessons she taught us in life will serve us all well for many years to come.
Last Friday the students in 3-6S held a short, but lovely, memorial to honour Mrs Sinclair. Part of the memorial included the release of colourful balloons. Mr Ward sprinkled the balloons with glitter as the students knew how much Mrs Sinclair loved it.
Thank you to Miss Burns for organising this beautiful event.
CONGRATULATIONS
Congratulations to Mrs Jordana Cooper-Durant who has been successful through expression of interest in gaining the Instructional Leader 3-6 position at Tamworth West Public School for the remainder of 2021, with the possibility of extension.
Jordana comes to us from Riverbank Public School, The Ponds (Sydney), and brings with her a wealth of experience in collaborative practice, collective teacher efficacy and quality teaching and learning.
Jordana commenced her new role on Monday, 31 May 2021. We are looking forward to working with Jordana and building the capacity of our staff across years 3 to 6.
CROSS COUNTRY
What a great day we had for our annual cross-country carnival on Thursday, 20 May 2021!
Students ran in pleasant weather conditions and were able to enjoy being outside of the school grounds as they ran around the Gipps Street sporting fields.
It was great to see the wonderful smiles, the fantastic number of students who participated competitively in the races and fabulous attitude towards the novelty events.
It was also great to see parents and staff encouraging everyone, running with them along the track and cheering them through at the finish line.
Thanks must go to the organising committee for the day, especially Mrs Milton and Mr Willis. Also, a massive thank you to Amy Reading and her canteen helpers, our Year 5 and 6 students, who not only raced, but managed to perform their important roles and the helpers from Tamworth High School. A job well done by all!
Congratulations to our age champions and our athletes who went on to represent Tamworth West Public School at the Tamworth Zone PSSA Cross-Country Carnival last Thursday. Please refer to the sports report for specific details.
SEMESTER 1 STUDENT REPORTS AND INTERVIEWS
Teachers will be offering the opportunity for parents and carers to discuss student progress via interviews between Tuesday, 15 June and Friday, 25 June 2021. Interviews can be in person or via telephone.
As we have over the past few years, we will use an external website for interview bookings. A note will be sent home soon advising you of the process to follow in order to book an interview time. I encourage parents and carers to take advantage of these interviews as they are a great opportunity to meet with your child’s teacher and discuss any concerns you may have.
Semester 1 student reports will be sent home on Friday, 18 June 2021.
NAPLAN
Our year 3 and 5 students have now completed their 2021 NAPLAN. All assessments, except year 3 writing, were completed online. Students were timetabled between the library and the computer room, and we ran catch up sessions, where possible, for students who were absent on a scheduled test day.
Results will be forwarded to families as soon as they are available.
STUDENT SUPERVISION
Please be aware that no supervision is provided for students who attend school before 8:55am. Recently, we have had students arriving as early as 7:45 am. Students, who arrive before 8:55 am, are asked to sit quietly under the COLA, which can be very cold on icy mornings. Supervision commences when the first bell rings at 8:55 am. Wherever possible, please keep students at home until 8:55 am or take advantage of our onsite before school care facilities.
THE RESILIENCE PROJECT
On May 18 Mrs Kay, Miss May and Mrs Sheedy joined me in Melbourne for the annual Resilience Project Teacher seminar.
To say it was amazing is an understatement.
We will be working with the staff during professional learning sessions to deliver the inspiring messages we took from this experience.
Our Tell Them from Me data reflects that many of our students are lacking a sense of belonging. In response to this, one of our strategic directions in the 2021-2024 School Improvement Plan is Connect Succeed Thrive and Learn. We must develop strong connections with, and between, our students. The Resilience Project is an evidence based program designed to support the health and wellbeing of young people. From 2017-2019, The University of Melbourne was commissioned to conduct an independent evaluation of the program and behavioural changes achieved in relation to gratitude, empathy and mindfulness. The findings of the evaluation can be found in the attached document.
Below is one of the quotes used on the day, it resonated with me because of the focus on a sense of belonging. When we feel we belong we are happier, healthier and more productive. At Tamworth West Public School, we are working hard to improve our students’ sense of belonging.
“Fitting in is about assessing a situation and becoming who you need to be to be accepted. Belonging, on the other hand, doesn't require us to change who we are.” – Brené Brown
It’s been a busy term so far.
I enjoy walking into classrooms and hearing students cheer when a teacher tells them it’s reading time. It shows me that they love to learn. It’s also great listening to the students read to another staff member and you can hear them trying to improve on a certain aspect of their reading such as fluency or even just using picture clues to help them read. Children are asking if they can read with me when I walk into the classroom to work with their teachers.
Since we have starting implementing CARS and STARS this term, it’s been wonderful to hear teachers and students using the same terminology in their lessons, not just CARS and STARS, that they are learning through the program. It’s beginning to show they are making connections.
Early Stage One and Stage One classes have been writing informative texts. They have been enjoying finding facts about places in Australia and animals. It’s wonderful hearing them develop their knowledge of the purpose of informative texts and knowing the differences between imaginative and informative texts. Kindergarten learnt that a baby echidna is called a puggle and found that to be quite funny.

Yaama,
During the past week our school has acknowledged Sorry Day and and Reconciliation Week. Students have been learning about the significance of these dates through in-class activities .
NAIDOC week will be celebrated in Week 10 this term. After meeting with students regarding what activities they would like for NAIDOC there was an overwhelming preference for an excursion. As such, we are in the process of organising cultural excursions for each stage. Details of these will be sent home in the coming weeks.
Hi all and who can believe that we are now into winter?? This year is just passing us by. The P&C have been busy since our last snippet in the newsletter with our Easter raffle, Easter bun drive, Bunnings BBQ , our Mother's Day stall and the organisation of our cookie dough fundraiser which closes this Friday, 4 June 2021, which is coming along nicely. On last check this morning we have sold nearly 250 tubs. Great work West!
I would like to thank all of those from the school community who are always there to help at these fundraisers. Without you these days could not happen and money could not be raised for our school.
The Mother's Day stall was an absolute success. We took nearly $3000 which I think may be a record for this stall. It was wonderful to see all the children so excited to be buying gifts for their Mums and loved ones. As we could not hold our stall last year there were double the amount of children who were doing this for the first time. It was a joy to see their smiling faces.
A huge thankyou to those who donate to our preloved uniform pool. This is very much appreciated as not only does it raise money for our school but it enables parents and carers to purchase uniforms at a discounted price. It is great to see so many children dressed in their full school uniform.
Our next meeting is on Monday, 21 June 2021 at 5.30 pm in the staffroom. Come along and meet other parents and teachers and keep in touch with what is happening at our school.
Jacki Galvin
President
P&C Committee
The PBL focus this month has been respectful relationships and communication. Students have been learning what respectful relationships and respectful communication looks, sounds and feels like. Students have also been encouraged to show empathy and understanding towards others and learning appropriate language to communicate their opinions in a respectful way.
On Friday, 29 May 2021, Kindergarten received their PBL badges. PBL stands for Positive Behaviour for Learning and is a framework used by Tamworth West Public School to create a safe and supportive learning environment for all students. Kindergarten have been engaging in regular PBL lessons since the beginning of the year. In recent weeks we have been focusing on kindness towards others. Kindergarten have been sharing acts of kindness that they have witnessed or experienced from other students. A PBL raffle ticket is then handed to the student who displayed kindness and they go into the weekly raffle draw to win a prize from the treasure chest. All Kindergarten students were excited to receive their PBL badge and acknowledged the importance of wearing it with pride.
Congratulations to our PBL raffle winners!

Welcome to Kindergarten 2021!
The last month has been a busy one for Kindergarten. We finally visited Healthy Harold and all the students loved the experience. Students learnt about healthy choices and were able to meet Harold himself.
Kinder attended their first Cross Country and it was a huge day. The excitement of attending an event outside the school and seeing parents in the crowd made it a memorable one.
Last week we attended The Very Hungry Caterpillar puppet show at the Capitol Theatre and it was magical. As we walked to Centrepoint Arcade we were lucky to see some mums and dads. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the day and some Kinder students even asked if they could go back the next day. A huge thank you to Miss Cunneen for organising this event. We absolutely loved it.
Lots has happened in class. Kinder has been doing lots of artwork, especially for Mother’s Day. In Maths, we have been learning about subtraction and area and the students have enjoyed the hands-on activities. In writing, we have just begun our unit on Information Reports. Kinder are learning to describe how an animal moves; what they look like and eat; and learning some interesting facts along the way. This unit of work will be linked with our excursion in week ten to the Marsupial Park.
Welcome back to Term 2! We have lots of exciting events happening this term.
Hello from all of us in Stage 1
We have been extremely busy this term and have been having lots of fun.
We have written information reports on famous landmarks around Australia including Uluru, The Sydney Harbour Bridge, The Great Barrier Reef and Wave Rock.
We have been super busy in maths.
We’ve been sliding, flipping and turning 2D shapes and making some fantastic designs.
We’ve looked at number patterns and we’ve been discussing different strategies we can use when solving addition and subtraction problems.
Miss Kahla May – 4M
Mr Adrian Wood – 4W
Mrs Courtney Lyon – 3L
Miss Felicity Bagshaw 3B (Relieving Stage 2 Assistant Principal)
Welcome to June!
This term is certainly flying and we have been fitting so many activities into each week
In the past few weeks Stage 2 students have been working on writing and presenting a persuasive speech to their classmates on why their favourite place is the best. It is great to see how well our students spoke using appropriate volume, tone, eye contact and pace. Students also demonstrated their ability to self-monitor their task by using the assessment marking rubric to see what the expectations are for the task.
It has been amazing to see the resilience that our stage 2 students have shown in the past few weeks. Our Year 3 students completed their NAPLAN tests earlier this month and both Mrs Lyon and I commented on how well the students behaved during the tests and that they all tried their best! Year 4 students completed the Check-In assessments. The Check-In assessment is an online reading and numeracy assessment. The Year 4 students completed this last year when they were in Year 3 and again this year.
Our whole school cross country on 20 May was a great success! All of our morning training sessions during fitness paid off and it was fabulous to see so many of our students have a go and run the course! Well done Stage 2! Some of our students then competed at the next level in Nundle on Thursday, 27 May 2021 and did an amazing job at representing our school.
We have had a lot of our students participating in various sporting activities and gala days in the past week. This includes softball and netball. Well done to all those students who have been training hard and having a go at all these new sports!
Students have also been working at mastering different athletic skills in preparation for our athletics carnival early next term. There has been lots of running, jumping and throwing and students are learning the correct techniques for each of the activities.
Sydney excursion notes and money are due by THIS FRIDAY (4 June).
If you wish for your child to attend, please complete the note and send back to school ASAP.
The stage 2 teachers look forward to continuing to work with you this term.
Felicity Bagshaw
Assessment overview
We are quickly approaching the end of another term. This term, Stage 3 successfully completed both NAPLAN online and Check-In assessments. We appreciate the support from both Mrs Spinks and Mrs Sheedy, who spent many hours coordinating access to technology and re-arranging timetables.
Students applied themselves and their improved typing skills were evident. Mr Willis, Mrs McInnes and I have already analysed the Year 6 results with Mrs Kay. The results are positive, it was pleasing to see that most students have shown a 20% increase in both literacy and numeracy results. We look forward to analysing the NAPLAN results when they are available.
Changes to the timetable and staffing
The last few weeks have certainly tested our ability to be resilient. TWPS sadly said goodbye to a respected colleague, Mrs Tanya Sinclair. Stage 3 students have demonstrated increased maturity and responsibility in recognising their sadness and acknowledge the need to move forward with their lives. Staff could not be prouder of the response by students to her passing.
I would like to thank Mr Chris Lyon and Miss Nicole Cunneen for their flexibility at this time. Mr Lyon worked with 5F in Mrs Flick’s absence and Miss Cunneen is teaching Mrs Sinclair’s class. These changes are expected to be short term. The full day rotations with five teachers will cease until further notice. Classes will have a one library lesson and another hour in computer. Parents will be advised of staffing changes once Mrs Kay has been able to appoint a teacher to 3/6S.
Excursion
We appreciate that families are becoming anxious about the excursion and apologise for lack of communication. We have had significant changes to staffing and role responsibilities in the past few months. I have prepared an expression of interest note for parents to be distributed next week. Sadly many venues remain closed or have restricted access. As previously advised at the parent teacher evening in Term 1, we have an approximate cost of $650 for the trip. We hope that families have been saving in preparation for their child’s participation to Canberra. In light of the current COVID outbreaks in Victoria, we also hope that the excursion will be able to go ahead.
Year 6 Shirts
I had hoped that Year 6 would be able to purchase jumpers this year in preference to polo shirts. I had eagerly set a deadline to maximize student’s usage of their purchased jumper, end of week 2 this term. Sadly, my best intentions have not come to fruition. I am sorry for any confusion and disappointment the Year 6 shirt order may have caused. As a result, this year we will be ordering polo shirts as originally planned. Orders forms will go out at the end of this term with further information for Year 6 students.
Wonder Rewards
We are collecting bread bags (clean) and bread clips. Collection boxes are located at Mrs Milton’s room.
Please watch the video for further information.
Kind Regards
Mrs Kirrily Milton
K3M are back in the garden!
It has been a busy term for K3M so far. We have started to replant our garden bed. We still have some great spinach plants growing and our marigolds are blooming.
This week we have started to plant some strawberries and calendulas flower. We hope to plant a blueberry bush next week and revamp the hanging herb garden too!
The students have been very diligently weeding some of the other garden beds to help out and they are doing a great job at working out what is a weed and what is a plant! We are looking forward to seeing our garden grow.
Our Early Stage 1 students had the opportunity to attend the stage performance of The Hungry Caterpillar.
It was certainly a winner and it was really an enjoyable experience for both the students and staff who attended.
We had lots fun at the school’s Cross Country event and enjoyed having our parents and grandparents there this year to cheer the students on.
Until next time, bye for now!
3-6S and 3-6D
During the last few weeks 3-6S and 3-6D have been working very hard on their athletics skills during sport. Everyone is looking forward to the Inclusive Sport Athletics Come and Try Day being held on Wednesday, 2 June, 2021. This will see us well prepared for the Be Skilled Be Fit day at school on Friday, 4 June, 2021. All students and staff will have been lots of fun increasing their fitness and staying warm now that the cooler weather is upon us!
3-6D have had an exciting 4 weeks with Mrs Kim Wilson, completing her Professional Experience placement in our classroom. The students have had an amazing time with Mrs Wilson and there wasn’t a dry eye in the classroom when we had to say our goodbyes on Friday afternoon.
In Geography both classes are continuing to learn about the Earth’s Environment with a focus on sustainability.
During History, stage 3 will continue learning all about government and how Australia's system of government and the responsibilities of each level of government.
Students are moving onto our second English unit called “Why I love Australia”. Students are continuing to learn how to persuade and convince an audience of their point of view in writing and through speech.
During our Math lessons all students have been working really hard to learn their multiplication facts, angles, place value, addition and subtraction. These activities have provided key areas of focus during the last couple of weeks.
3-6S have also been doing some exciting theme-based work in their room. They are currently studying the Great Barrier Reef. Their learning activities have seen the students completely involved in a fully integrated program based on this theme.
Library Learning
Students have been continuing to improve their research skills to find information about the topics they are working on. We have been searching for books and using World Book Online to find facts about different things. Students have been enjoying exploring World Book Online to find out about a range of topics.
Book Week
Book Week is approaching very quickly. The dates for Book Week are 21-27 August and the theme is New Worlds, Old Worlds, Other Worlds. Traditionally, one of our most exciting parts of Book Week is our parade. We love seeing all the students dress up as their favourite book character and parade in front of family and friends. Hopefully, this year we will be able to conduct our full parade, so start planning your costumes!
New Books in the Library
Below is a small selection of new books that have recently arrived in the Library. Don’t forget your Library bag so you can borrow some of our new books.

MUSIC
Kindergarten explored a range of percussion instruments including a violin, glockenspiel, drums and mandolas. Dr Steve Cunneen visited the children and brought a variety of string instruments and the children had a lovely time exploring the different sounds they make as well as having a sing-a-long.
Year 1 and 2 have been tooting away at the front of the school and have learnt a song a week. They were so clever that they no longer needed the music for some of the songs. Each student received a head band and each time they learnt a song they received a ribbon to tie to their headband to signify they had “levelled up,”
Year 3 and 4 beat out some beats on the bucket drums. Different beats and sequences were taught and they thoroughly enjoyed listening to a variety of music and playing along to the songs.
Year 5 and 6 were lucky enough to have the very talented Mr Munday to teach guitars to them. All students learnt the song “I Gotta Feeling” including how to finger pluck the song and the riff and the chords. It was a fantastic opportunity to have Mr Munday and we thank him for his time.
Cross Country
On Thursday 20 May, we held our annual Cross Country Carnival at the Gipps Street playing fields. Students and staff enjoyed the day. All K-6 students participated in a cross country event as well as some fun activities. A big thank you to Tamworth High School for sending us students to assist with the barbeque and out on the course. Thank you also to Amy Reading for running a sausage sizzle for students and parents.
The students who finished in the top four went on to the Zone Cross Country in Nundle. The winning house for the Cross Country event was Wentworth.
Our age champions for the day were:
8/9 Girls - Evie Glide
8/9 Boys - Jace Dawson
10 Girls - Ryleigh Woolfe
10 Boys - Naite Syron
11 Girls - Mackenzie Kelly
11 Boys - Cooper-Lee Shaw and Travis Mumford
12 Girls - Maddison Mason
12 Boys - Jaxon Syron
Zone Cross Country
Last Thursday 27 May, the Zone Cross Country was held at Nundle Gold Course. We had a large turnout for the event and all students did exceptionally well. Special mention goes to Jaxon Syron who was the 12/13 Year boys age champion, coming in first overall. Cooper-Lee Shaw finished 6th in the 11 year boys. These boys will attend the upcoming Regional Cross Country Carnival in Coolah.
Congratulations to all who attended.
Horse Sports
The Quirindi Horse Sports was a resounding success. The weather was delightful, and both our riders gained ribbons throughout the day's events. Angela Emery and Kelsie Jenner represented our school proudly and with respect.
Congratulations to Angela and Kelsie. Angela rode her sweet gelding Jacko extremely well against strong competition. She placed Reserve Highest Point Scorer 11-Under 9 years Girls Champion. Kelsie rode her lovely mare Diva, and narrowly missed out to Angela for the Reserve Highest Point Scorer 11-9 years Girls Champion.
We look forward to seeing our TWPS equestrians perform well at upcoming events over the next term. Don’t forget if you are able to walk, trot and canter independently and have your own mount, to contact Mrs Milton... we’d love to expand our team.
Netball PSSA and Gala Day
PSSA Netball and Zone trials:
On Monday 17 May, a mixed team of nine players participated in the PSSA netball knockout in Tamworth. Four of our players had never played netball before that day, but the whole team gave the day their best effort. Unfortunately, we were knocked out in round 3 of the day. Three of our girls were also nominated for Zone trials. Emily Innes and Maddison Mason were shortlisted to trial at the end of the day for the Tamworth Zone team. Maddison Mason was selected and will move forward to North West trials on Friday, 28 May.
Schools Cup Gala Day
On Wednesday, 26 May, forty three students across Stage 2 and Stage 3 participated in the Netball NSW Schools Cup Gala Day at Tamworth Sports Dome. We had four very enthusiastic teams, the Quokkas, the Bilbies, the Swashbucklers and the Peglegs, who all had a fantastic day playing against other schools from the region. Our Stage 2 teams, the Quokkas and the Bilbies, had a wonderful day of learning the game and putting new skills into practice. The Quokkas were also lucky enough to enjoy learning some ball skills from Meg, who is a local Tamworth representative player and coach.
Our Stage 3 teams, the Peglegs and the Swashbucklers had a fun day playing in the competitive competition. The Peglegs team had never played before, but certainly picked up some skills and gave it their best shot out on the court. They made a huge improvement in their playing skills over the course of the day. The Swashbucklers were back together again with a few additional players and gave it their all against the other teams. They worked well as a team and finished the day in second place.
A huge thank you to Mrs Ward, Tippy, Renae Mumford and Emily Crompton for helping with the teams on the day, as well as Grace, Hannah and Noah for umpiring over the course of the day.
Girls Softball Gala Day
On Monday, 24 May nine girls and Miss Cunneen walked down to the softball fields to participate in a gala day. Our first game was against Tamworth Public with a familiar coach on the team, Mrs Heather Richards, a previous teacher from Tamworth West. This was a friendly and enjoyable game with both sides learning lots about the game. We won this game and advanced to the next round. In next round we played Duri and it was a tough competition. Our skills were pushed to the limit and Maddison and Haley Mason effectively combined with the support of the team to reduce the numbers of runs scored. The game ended in a draw. Our third game saw us combine with Westdale and Tamworth Public for a friendly and skill-based game. Many new friends were made and lots of laughs occurred. A huge thank you to Mrs Mason for co-coaching with Miss Cunneen on the day. The girls were demonstrated resilience, sportsmanship and a positive attitude all day and should be congratulated for their efforts.
Boys Softball Gala day
On Tuesday 25th May Mrs Spinks accompanied our boys softball team down to the fields to compete in the PSSA Softball knockout competition. Unfortunately we had one student withdraw on the morning due to illness, however, the boys did not let this dampen their spirits!
Our team consisted of boys all the way from year 3 to year 6. This is an amazing effort as most schools only include stage 3 students. We played against a number of schools from our area including Duri/Currabubula, Tamworth South and Tamworth Public.
The boys displayed great skills, which only improved as the day progressed. They changed positions on the field and tried new positions across the day. We had solid hits by Blake, Cooper Lee and Zac. Declan and Zac pitched well and Travis Mumford was a standout in catcher. ALL the boys contributed to the game with great running, catching, throwing and fielding in the game. By the third game the boys were stealing bases and a few more runners home, made for a close game. Their sportsmanship and positive attitude made it a great day out.
Declan, Cooper-Lee and Travis all tried out for the Tamworth team and Cooper-Lee and Travis were successful in making it to the next round for the North West trials. We wish the boys all the best.
Thanks to Mrs Spinks who took time out of her busy week to take the team down to the gala day. The boys had a great day and I am so proud of our WHOLE team, including the boys that couldn’t make it, but had been training with the team at school. Well done!
A BIG thank you to ALL the staff and parents that assisted with softball this year. Ms Cunneen, Mrs Spinks and Mrs Mason helped make our gala days happen. Well done to our amazing boys and girls’ teams that trained hard, gave up numerous lunch breaks and participated in the gala days. You represented our school and more importantly, yourselves with pride.
I look forward to seeing some of you next year for another round of softball.
